The Dark Knight Turns 15: How Heath Ledger Was Remembered (Flashback)

Published 2023-07-23
'The Dark Knight' cast and director Christopher Nolan reflect on Heath Ledger's role as Joker, in the wake of the actor's death from an accidental overdose in Jan. 2008, before the film was released. Christian Bale calls Ledger's performance 'phenomenal,' while Maggie Gyllenhaal notes, 'He's doing something in this movie that is extremely rare, even among the greatest actors.' The 'Oppenheimer' director reflects on helping Ledger craft the character within the world he built for 'Batman Begins.' Aaron Eckhart looks back at Harvey Dent's one-on-one moment in the hospital with Joker, admitting that he couldn't help but admire Ledger's talent while acting in scenes together. Bale makes a point to note that while Ledger immersed himself into Joker behind the scenes, without the makeup and costumes, 'he was Heath' to everyone on the set.

Heath Ledger as the joker is the reason why The Dark Knight is the only Batman movie I've ever loved. RIP Heath, you are truly missed.

Heath Ledger as the Joker is one of the best character performances in any movie ever and I will stand by that statement for the rest of my life. He was a wonderful actor. To this day I’m still so saddened by his death.

Dark Knight and Mamma Mia came out at the same time, I remember seeing them on two consecutive days. Rest in peace, Heath Ledger, it's a shame that he didn't live to see how much of a legacy he would have.

I remember when this came out in 2008. It absolutely took over pop culture. Everyone was obsessed with it quoting the lines. I remember Halloween for that year every other person was joker or batman. Good memories.

If he had gone to rehab and stopped taking drugs he would still be alive today. 🥺. He could've completed all of The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus and could've been in Inception, The Dark Knight Rises as a cameo, The Trial of Chicago 7 and Mad Max Fury Road. He could've played Ronan The Accuser in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Captain Marvel and Pennywise in It 1 and 2 and could've been in Dune 1 as Paul Atreides' dad.
