the fact that Modrinth decompiled and took down the mod within 3 hours after the report is reassuring to me.
  • @bukachell
Good thing I didn't even know about borderless window mods
  • @jexusdomel5194
you know its serious when he doesnt finish the daily crossword puzzle
  • @LordMarshyMan
This is a win for me because 12 year old me never figured out how to download mods without being scared that herobrine would hack my computer
  • @SillyTrain
"if you've downloaded this mod, you might have a virus" me who has no mods and hasn't downloaded anything: oh god i need to check now
  • @modrinth
2:05 thank you for not inverting our logo this time :) (also thanks for spreading the word, hopefully all 374 people who downloaded it will be made aware of this)
  • @turalto9324
my heart dropped for a second when he mentioned borderless mining
  • @Lockmahn
I came for virus warnings, stayed to learn windowless windows were a thing.

The fact that Modrinth noticed this malware so quickly regenerates my faith in humanity
  • @daenite2480
Not a person who usually downloads mods, but honestly I really appreciate how you're always one of the first people in my subscription feed to warn us of malware in mods.

Thanks for not inverting our logo :) But yeah, you are correct, projects are only reviewed when they're submitted for listing. Unfortunately, moderating every posted version is not humanly possible, and automatic detection tools are hard to implement right (where they don't cause too many false positives, thus wasting moderators time that could've spent reviewing legit mods), and incredibly easy to work around through code obfuscation as you mentioned. Nonetheless, we're exploring all the options and had a lengthy discussion about this with our community. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to make modding safer for everyone 💚🐸

The fact that Modrinth themselves made a post warning about it and did not try to hide it just shows how great great they are
  • @NRIQ_nl
Ive also been made aware of this through a discord server which the owner of, makes addons for a mod called "create" but just as i got informed on that discord server, i went on youtube and this got recommended to me. Thanks for the (double) heads up, PhoenixSC!

The fact the OG Reddit post warning about this was locked by FeedTheBeast mods didn't sit right with me as for the last mods I downloaded was some hair for The Sims 4 on May 2nd and that game just came out of a Malware Infection ring in February/March with various mods as well
  • @AlexBarbu
I can understand them not having the resources to double check every update. But I think it would be a healthy policy to have a randomized check of updates, with the check being more frequent for newer mods added. So lets say, for a new mod you might check 1 of every 3 updates, while for a long standing, established mod, you check 1 in every 10-20 updates.

I love how Modrinth actually brings out that there is malware and does something against it not ignoring it and being quiet about it like Curseforge did.
  • @cr7king784
I haven't downloaded the mod but i really appreciate you looking after your community
  • @lordquadrato437
Glad you realized it only affects about 372 people. But still good to stay informed about what happens with security in the modding conmunity.
