The Joe Montana vs Steve Young quarterback controversy in the late 80s and early 90s was one of the biggest debates in all of football. Montana at the time had just won 2 Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers however a 2nd back surgery resulted in head coach Bill Walsh making a trade for Steve Young. During their time together in San Francisco, the quarterbacks battled it out for the starting position that ended with one of them getting traded.

That 92 season when Young won the MVP while Montana was on the bench cus of injury, that was the writing on the wall.

The research on this video is 100% I know this story well. I like how you went week by week during that 88 season, the height of this controversy

Imagine having Joe Montana being your qb and Steve being the backup. That would be a great problem to have. While I agree that Joe was the goat before Brady came along, people take Young for granted, especially the 49er fans, they were too spoiled by the number of great players they had
  • Love the music intro. To me, it wasn't the quarterbacks fault. Bill Walsh did that on purpose. They knew Joe time was running out as an elite QB. His body was breaking down. Joe won that last ring in '89. Steve Young only needed to wait until Joe would inevitably get hurt again and the team was his. That's how it played out. Tough for Joe being that it happened in the NFC Championship Game but that's football.
  • I believe if Steve would have shown he was a better passer or equally better passer as he was a runner, he would have been the starter in 1987 or 88. Steve was very inconsistent as a passer back then, and I believe Bill Walsh used that as the determining factor
  • 49ers crapped on Montana so bad never should have been a controversy Joe would have won two more super with Joe if they would have stayed with the greatest Joe cool tool them letting him call his own plqyes
  • Montana made me like football as a child. Young made me love it. Their battle always makes me wonder how many legendary quarterbacks we missed out on because they never got a chance in the league. It's crazy how terrible he was with Tampa Bay only to eventually break the QB rating record with accuracy out of this world. It would have been so easy for him to have never gotten the right chance with the right team.
  • As a niner fan born after the bill walsh era, thank u for the deep dive into the past

Great work putting this video together. I feel so blessed being able to watch these games. I was in high school when Joe was beating my Giants and then I was able to enjoy Steve while in college, but hey at least my G-Men won 2. Thanks LT 🀣

As a Cowboy fan, I'll never forget the 1992 NFC Championship game where a healthy Joe Montana sat on the bench. Thank you. Steve was good but he's no JoMo! Joe is the GOAT. Excellent video, exactly as I remember it.
  • I am ADDICTED to your awesome channel bro! I love watching all your videos!

"The hits quarterbacks had taken back in those days were nothing compared to today." The qb hits back then were far more devastating compared to what we see today is more like it.

I really wish that Joe Montana played against the 49ers at Candlestick. Would have been amazing to see that.

Walsh knew exactly what he was doing. Like a woman who manipulates two guys against eachother to find out who to monkey-branch to and when.
