Jeezus, CNN. That's NOT the headline this interview warrants. Good grief.

My pop just died two months ago at 103 years old. He served in WW2 and was so proud of it, he spoke of it often. I miss that old man so much.

My father landed on Omaha beach, wounded in his shoulder 19 days later, and had a metal plate holding that shoulder together for the remainder of his life, rarely did he speak of the experience until close to the end of his life 15 years ago. When I left for Vietnam the look in his eyes said he knew what I did not about war at that time, and he was afraid for me. After my return, he never asked one question about my experience there, strange. All these men were heroes in their day as every veteran is and will always be. Please America and other countries do more for your veterans. They have earned it.
  • My grandfather arrived on Omaha beach on June 7th, 1944 and died Sept 21, 1944. 5 days before my mother's 2nd birthday. My grandmother was 7 months pregnant with my Aunt. Those 3 short months for a 22 year old young father were undoubtedly a living nightmare. His letters reflect how he goes from "when I get home" to "if I ever make it home". Casualties of war affect the generations that follow. My mother never got to have a dad and grieved her whole life over what could have been.

My uncle, 18 years young, died on D-Day at Normandy. He was small & weighed down by his pack Like many others, he was killed in the water, never even reaching the beach. People fail to understand the brutality of D-Day & the truly selfless sacrifice that many young men made on that day. Every year, my mother pulled out his final letter to her. She would read it with tears running down her face.
  • I applaud Tom Hanks for not taking the CNN bait on such an important date. He left the spotlight on the heroes of D-Day they were there to honor. Well done sir, thank you.

My dad was in WWII & we lost him to dementia right before his 98th birthday last year. This inspiring video brought me even more appreciation for the men we lost then & the last of the WWII veterans we're losing today. Thank you Tom Hanks for your insight appreciation & utmost respect for all our veterans including my dad.

I’m glad that Tom Hanks didn’t let politics ruin such a important occasion, the news anchor should be ashamed for even trying to bring politics into this.
  • To those who were there eighty years ago, THANK YOU! GOD BLESS YOU. 👍

Rest in peace William ‘Bill’ H. Cameron, Canadian Naval war hero of D-Day. He was 100 years old, mere days away from this special reunion. Your service shall never be forgotten.

Should have asked him how often he flew on the lolita express
  • @jcastanza
This video deserves a much better title, agreed.
  • Forrest Gump aged well and is way smarter than I thought he would be
  • @U.S.President
My grandpa passed away in 2004, as a Chinese Nationalist soldier, he fought bravely in the Pacific theatre.
  • He did not take the bait. He gave a balanced and astute response regarding the world changing battle and its relevance in current times. Bravo!

Hanks is one classy American. Smart, witty, eloquent, charismatic, a heart of gold. A gentleman in the truest form of the word. A mensch.

I Remember how I loved singing this at school many years ago. We sang it for a program for our parents and it was amazing how good we sounded because we all loved it. Shouldn’t we all get back to that—wanting peace for our kids—shouldn’t we put that first? Let there be peace on earth And let it begin with me Let There Be Peace on Earth The peace that was meant to be With God as our Father Brothers all are we Let me walk with my brother In perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me Let this be the moment now. With ev'ry step I take Let this be my solemn vow To take each moment and live Each moment in peace eternally Let there be peace on earth And let it begin with me Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Jill Jackson / Sy Miller Let There Be Peace on Earth lyrics © Music Copyright Consultant Grp

Thank you Mr. Hanks for speaking so eloquently for our beloved veterans.

Mr Hanks is surprising me through this cogent interview. My father was in the landing force and I’m realizing, perhaps for the first time, what a hero he was. He was 19 years old.
