This reminds me of the Joe Thornton/Patrick Marleau captaincy change in San Jose. Actually that entire Sharks team reminds me of this leafs team.

If Tavares can’t do it then Matthews is definitely not up to the job. Matthews is all about him and that’s where the leafs fall short on all sides.

Acquiring Tavares with his bloated contract was Dubas' biggest blunder. it possibly cost the Leafs a legitimate run at the Cup.

The way I say it, Matthews taking the captaincy is both inevitable and necessary. Official captain aside, Matthews drives the team, whether he's truly the best "leader" is secondary. The team rises and falls with Matthews, team organization will come to reflect that

You People that say lets strip the C from Tavares, should remember that BOTH Tavares and Marner played ALL 7 games in the playoffs, can you say that about Nylander -3 or Matthews -2.5, NO YOU CAN'T!!! Instead of talking about the LETTERS, you should start thinking about Random DRUG TESTING in the NHL!!! And have you seen a Superstar do an interview, stoned out on COCAINE, just ask Edmonton, not pretty!!!

Hate to say it but no matter where this guy goes he gets treated like a bag of shit. This guy has done nothing but honored his contract. What a cheap way of saying he deserves to be the next captain.."he leads by example" lol..lol..not one bit. Missed 2 key playoff games...Tkachuk had to have teammates dress him to play when they eliminated Toronto 3 yrs ago. A captain doesn't chew out a teammate on the bench on National Tv. Matthews has some growing up to do.

John T is judged by is salary .but he's done more in playoffs then 34 and 16 .imo don't strip him .but wonder if this isn't a move to get him to wave his NMC ?
