In 1993 — fresh off the release of their debut EP, 'Opiate,' the year before — TOOL played two shows at the Scientology Centre in Hollywood, California. The concerts have since become the stuff of legend. A young comedian named David Cross first heard about TOOL when he saw an ad for the shows — and not long after, he would welcome singer Maynard James Keenan (fronting a then-fictional band called Puscifer) onto his HBO sketch comedy series 'Mr. Show.' Nearly 30 years later, REVOLVER reunited Cross and Keenan, enlisting the former to interview the latter. In this excerpt from their weird, insightful and hilarious convo, they look back on TOOL's infamous Scientology Centre shows.

David Cross' new comedy special, 'I'm From the Future,' is out now: bit.ly/3IASo0Y

I love that David found Tool instead of Scientology lol
  • I cant get over them playing Opiate at the Scientology Center! Maynard's troll level 1000

It's great to see Maynard not be standoffish in an interview or actually wanting to talk about Tool for a change. David's probably one of the only people who could have gotten that result so Cheers to him.
  • "anybody with a decent high school education could walk in and be like, whoa you're full of shit." Damn LOL

It's cool to see Maynards' personality shine through a little bit.
  • I'm just so glad to hear Maynard, himself, verify what he thinks about Scientology.
  • I had a buddy in college write a paper on Scientology and he went on one of those free tours in the Hollywood center. He said before the tour they had made very clear there were rooms and sections of the building that were totally and completely off limits. Pete being Pete, went off trail and walked into one of them room’s… for the sake of time I’ll leave it at that, but he actually got caught, held at gun point, and they basically said he was lucky they were letting him leave. To this day if he even hears about someone being in the vicinity that practices Scientology, he goes into damn near anxiety attack mode and will let it be known he doesn’t want to be in the same room as them. Pete’s my old old friend, you can startle him, sure, but to scare him is a bit more of a challenge. He hears “Scientology “ and you can physically see his wheels start spinning. Off topic, I’ve met Maynard a few times. He was once a part of my uncle’s band Green Jelly/Green Jello (after the getting sued thing).

I used to work in Boston for the Church of Scientology and got people in to take those personality tests on Newbury Street (The Center was down the road in Beacon), and I had figured out fairly quickly that is was a bullshit organization, but I was still hoping for a paycheck (another story). On one occasion I was left alone in the room with the machine that scores those tests. I wanted to try to see if I could get it to give an actual 'good' score. Nope, no matter what I fed it, there was always an issue with you.

A few years ago I did some volunteer work for a foundation that helps people get out of Scientology and had to quit as it put me on their radar and they were trying to find out where I live and stuff about my kid. I started getting strange emails on my personal email and then some calls and texts. I miss doing the work, but my kiddo's safety comes first. Glad to know what Maynard's stance is on the cult.

I took the personality test one time. My result was Cold Blooded and Heartless! The guy said I really needed help that I really needed scientology but I told him that I was certain my result would have made my Drill Instructor proud. Then I went and drank about 20 beers.
  • @issahumps
I got kicked out at the Scientology place in Hollywood lol they realized we were all drunk when taking the test 😂 lady’s European accent suddenly changed to American when she realized and called for security haha

David Cross: “So did you go to the gift shop?” Maynard: “I can’t remember where I was because they took us to the dungeon to hear the screamings.” I don’t know about you but, I believe him.

This show is so infamous among Tool circles, love the insight and the humorous takes by them.
  • @Adam-qs5ir
Just saw TOOL last night. 3rd time seeing them and they never disappoint. 🤘
  • @snell2k
I was there for night two! I was 17yrs old and that was my first “rock” concert… until then I had only listened to rap music and this was all I needed to open my eyes to other music. I actually was listening to Opiate this morning so it’s funny this video popped up - they’re listening 🤣
  • @mrPauljacob
I've always loved David Cross... But now knowing he's a friend of Maynard, I love him even more.
  • @desertbutt
As a huge fan of both of these people, the entire interview is great.
