In a "breakout" re-edit of a section of the Indiana Jones 5 Mega Review, Michael discussed the devolution of Indiana Jones' famous outfit from Raiders of the Lost Ark across the four sequels ending with Dial of Destiny, and how the costume has over the years gone horribly off the rails.

It would be one thing if they had changed Indys attire to reflect a change in his style as he aged,as one normally does, but they decided to "keep the look the same" and if that is the appearance you are going for, then get it right,or don't do it at all.Great video once again.

No one can EVER say you lack passion, information, and valuable analysis, when it comes to your videos! This breakdown is second to none

Short story - I was outside Bernie Pollack's office (Bernie was Ford's personal designer) when he was prepping for Crystal Skull when who should appear but Peter Botwright (of Wested Leather) all the way from England. Mr. Botwright had come with jackets in hand to show what he had made for the previous films, but Bernie somewhat unceremoniously dismissed him out of hand, telling him he had his own guy to make the jackets. Mr. Botright was stunned and all I could do was shrug and look sympathetic. A lot of these decisions come down to the peculiar whims of the costume designer - and they ARE whims without any discernable rhyme or reason. Add to that the fact that big stars like Ford will not let you dress them to make them look their best and this is what you get.

Indy put his bag on top of his jacket after the last crusade tank battle to avoid a repeat of that fiasco I like to think. Also, I think last crusade is the indys best look. The boxy jacket and tie looks great imo

You know I am not mad at this outfit, the one thing I am mad about is that Indy did not have the gun shot stitch on his left arm jacket for every single movie.!

Glad I'm not the only one with the same feelings on Indy's classic look throughout the film series. When I first watched the "making of" Documentary in the first DVD box-set released in the decade of the 2000s, the costume designer for Raiders revealed the logic and care that went into Indy's clothes and how it was featured in the film, it gave the impression of an adventurous man who practically lived in his clothes and that his hat was very much beloved. In my eyes, Indiana Jones looked natural in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in the subsequent films afterwards, he's wearing a costume. And yes, the Raiders Hat IS the Best and True version of Classic Fedora.

I can't unsee this. Everything degrades away from the source material. You are hilariously specific!

I've always dug his old man Indy look in Young Indiana Jones and the Mystery of the Blues. At least its different enough to bring something new to the table in a sensible way. Excellent video by the way!

Man, every time Retroblasting drops a video, it feels like a present.
  • He carried the bag on the outside of his jacket after crusade because after it got stuck on the tank he could not get if off because it was under his jacket. So basically it nearly killed him. Being over the jacket it would be a much greater chance to remove the thing if it got stuck on something. I know you mentioned that but its the reason.

It bears repeating. As for myself, in the early days, I never assumed that the outfit was supposed to look the same, given the wear and tear that had to be part of his life, but of course that was before they made the hat part of his origin. For one story, at least.

I thanked you for the breakdown of this outfit in the original review and I have to thank you for this re-edit again

We all know Harrison Ford doesn’t care about any of the characters he plays. After 3 movies he should know what he should be wearing and how, but he just shows up, reads his lines, collects a check and goes home. Actors that care about character and lore, like Sam Witwer and Henry Cavill speak up and then get called difficult or chauvinists. Maybe we’re expected to assume that 20-ish years later Indy is a broke sloppy old man who’s favorite cloths are no longer available from Hugo Boss. But you’re right, there really is no excuse for the laziness that made an iconic character look so disheveled. Wearing the Dial of Destiny look, you still pull it off better than Ford did, his cloths didn’t even look to be his size, everything looks oversized and baggy.

I believe Disney try to cover up the lack of the gun by switching the placement of the shoulder bag to the right side, or sadder yet they just did not care. So sad, just an observation. Thanks for upload a edited version.

An excellent re-edit of footage taken from the superb Indiana Jones 5 review video, Michael. I do hope this video re-edit whets the appetite of newcomers and encourages them to watch the full version of Michael's Indy 5 Mega review video.

One of your best videos. For a man who used to wear a morral, I can agree on how it should be worn.
  • Dude! Another spot on video! I thought I was the only one who noticed these details.
  • @djnary2896
Your attention to detail on Indy's costume is nothing short of meticulous!!! I too noticed gradual changes in Indy's outfit, but could never put my finger on it (I simply assumed through the first three films they were each different outfits.) Thank you for giving this issue such clarity and focus on why costuming is SO important to a character...particularly one this iconic!! The slop factor on the costume for Indy 5 is inexcusable!!
