Batman (2016-) #149 Review

Published 2024-06-18
In this video I talk about Batman (2016-) #149 and my major gripes with it.

Plot: “DARK PRISONS – EPILOGUE”When confronted with the totality of your life, and all the choices that led you to where you are, do you build on the ashes, or rise from them? The Batman who is left standing will have to answer this question quickly, as someone is already sifting through those ashes, with an eye toward saving the world!

I accidentally put what I had in a reply to the other post. This is one for the algorithm.
  • Not a fan of Damian disregarding the clone Bruce like that. It feels like character regression given all of his development in Tomasi and Williamson's books. Bruce gets his money and his hand back, OK. Would've preferred if he'd gotten back the main mansion as well as building new stuff but whatever. Why didn't Bruce just defeat Vandal Savage for good instead of just punching him a few times and calling it a day, Dark Knight Strikes Again style?
  • The only thing missing from this ridiculous issue was a full resurrection of Alfred. Call it reconning. Call it whatever. But if you're just going to undo ALL of the major choices/changes from the past several years in one issue, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF ANY OF IT??? I love big, ballsy story choices--- characters dying, hands getting chopped off, Bruce going broke, the manor being taken, etc etc etc.... but I want to see the follow-through; the long-term repercussions/consequences/fallout. If you're going to have a gigantic thing happen, then choose to ignore it for 24 issues, then just decide erase at the last minute in 6 short panels... I can't help but feel deeply cheated out of a hell of a lot of time and money. Like, basically, we're back to January 2020 / Batman 86. Everything that has happened since issue 85 was a complete waste of time (including Miracle Molly, Punchline (what a massive waste that turned out to be), and The Designer (who was being built up to be the next Hush, but was then immediately killed, 44 seconds after his 1st appearance), etc). When Bruce's hand got chopped off, I was SO EXCITED! I started texting and calling Bat-friends. We started speculating about all the amazing, unexpected stuff that was going to change/happen as a result of this historic moment. Then, nothing happened. Some smoke came out of his fingertips that one time, after Batman Returns Batman gave him the robo-hand. That was it. Luke Skywalker had a more exciting hand transplant story. It was just... a HUGE MISSED OPPORTUNITY. Chip Z could've done something truly new and epic. But he just ignored it. For a crappy "deep cut" throwback reference (Zur En Arrh), no less. Get it together DC.

I've been off this run for a while, an nothing I've seen entices me. I want to read about the characters....not original characters with old character names. None of the characters in this run respond in a way that would be believable based on prior history....and the writer's preference for certain characters at the expense of a cohesive plot are disappointing.
