Backpacking Yellowstone - Heart Lake to 9 Mile Trailhead, Late Sept. 2020 (Extended Version)

Published 2020-09-30
This is a trip report (Long Version) for a 5 night, 6 day Yellowstone backcountry backpacking trip. We start at Heart Lake Trailhead and end at the 9 Mile Trailhead. 54 miles total. Note: The video is too big to render in 4K and play on YouTube, so 1080P it is.

Short version can be found here:    • Backpacking Yellowstone September, 2020

Our initial plan for this trip was to go through the Thorofare and out the Heart Lake Trailhead, making this a 9-day trip, but the physical limitations of my hiking buddy prevented us from advancing down the Thorofare trail. He simply wouldn't be able to climb the mountain in his condition against the time table we had established with our permit. So, we turned north and headed out the 9 Mile Trail.

Day 1 was wonderful. A bit of a wet start then storms all night on us. Day 2 brought us the longest day of our trip, with Chris having pack issues, everything being soaked, we never made it to our intended campsite. Instead, camping at the Outlet Lake campsite to avoid walking in the dark. Day 3 brought us over the pass and down toward 7G2 where we were supposed to camp. We passed the camp and continued on the Trail Creek Trail toward Trail Bay campsite on the East side of the SE Arm of Yellowstone Lake. At this point we realized Chris wasn't going to be able to make the intended trip, so we decided to turn north and head up the 9-Mile Trailhead. Day 4 brought us to the 5E1 campsite, which had one of the most epic views from a campsite I've ever seen. Lots of wildlife. On day 5 we hiked up to 5E4 and camped next to the lake. This is a 5-star campsite. On day 6 we hiked out and was picked up by a very friendly Italian named Stephano. Stephano, if you are reading this, you are one of the best people we've ever met in Yellowstone.

Thanks for watching! If you have any questions, please let me know.

NOTE: I'm not a pro at this. This is my first attempt at a long trip video. I do this for fun, and this video is for my friends and family. If you have something bad to say, just move along. I will delete your negative comments or disable comments altogether.

Really enjoyed this! We’re doing a 5 day loop around Heart Lake this year, and hoping I can work out a big Thorofare Loop in 2023.
