Today I visit with Dr. John Delony about the real cost of clutter on our lives and mental health. There is a strong connection between clutter and stress and anxiety and yet it's not wrong that we keep things hoping for security.

  • Years ago as a new homeschooling parent, a “seasoned” homeschool mom told me, “You’re kids are mirrors of you. If you see something in your child that you don’t like . . . guess who gets to change first?” She was right!

I watched the whole thing! Thank you! I am 17 yrs clean and sober. There is something about trading addictions, and it doesn’t have to be about a substance. I declutterred because my sister was coming to stay. Declutterring my place took a few months. And I live a one bedroom apartment. Way too many drawers in place. No rules for other people who want to send me things. No rules for myself to live by. Once I declutterred and established rules my life became so much easier.

“You don’t need motivation, you need momentum”- never heard that one! What a 💡 Thank you
  • OMG, Dawn, you are such a good interviewer! Your previous professional experience as a radio host is evident. I hope you will continue to do shows like this, with interesting and articulate guests!
  • @sandrad7633
Yes you can. I lost 33 kg by changing my diet and walking/ running in my local park. All by myself.
  • I finally, after more than four years of listening, put most if our plates and other day-to-day flatware in a time-will-tell bin. It has been 24 hours and the difference is amazing! I can’t believe I saved this for last; yes I have to wash the dishes, but it is not piling up next to the sink, endlessly. Wow!

We had an unsafe vehicle that we traded in for a newer safe vehicle last week. I was driving yesterday and the relief I felt was worth every penny we paid.

Schools cannot be tasked with “catching” stress responses in our children. These teachers have up to 25 kids in their classroom at a time, interacting with each other, coming from different home environments, etc. And the older these kids get, the less time they spend in one teacher’s classrooms. We, as PARENTS, are the ones who are responsible for observing these changes in our kids. When schools are able to help, it’s just a bonus. The reason we are in this much trouble is because of parents who believe “the school should have caught that”, when it pertains to mental and emotional health.
  • Man. The part about not trusting ourselves after so many failures hit hard! Great chat, thank you guys so much.
  • @tarawilliams8712
The harder work is being present right now, with boredom and discomfort. Wow! That’s a quote for life.
  • @rivasoucie
We are very very minimal and declutter daily with almost no effort! Dawn’s teachings and encouragement have been a cornerstone of our journey and we are forever thankful that she shares so generously.
  • I've never gone back in an episode days later to take notes/re-listen until those one. The "how do you want our house to feel when you walk in the door" question is so profound for me right now. Thank you both for getting together for this podcast.
  • @BayRaeDay
I absolutely love the two of you together.
  • @lisac9568
Really need to hear this today, heading in for my second dentist apt to get my teeth fixed, it’s hard dealing with teeth issues, knowing they will only get worse with time, but right now it feels SO MUCH HARDER swallowing my pride and getting it done. I know at the end of this journey, I will be so beyond thankful that I chose this “hard” over the hard of not taking action.
  • Dawn, what a gracious and articulate host you are. A great interview. I think you bring out the best in people.
  • @tonyahinz766
I cannot put into words what a huge impact you've both had on my life. The two of you have helped heal my heart, my soul and my home. Thank you for all you do! ❤❤❤
  • @keelienne
I‘m crying, THIS talk really hit me hard. Think I urgently need to dry my eyes, finally walk the dog and listen again, but with taking notes. Man..
  • Thank you for making the “Taking back your home” course affordable. I just started the course. I have been trying to declutter for a long time. I was ok when I was poor because I couldn’t afford a lot of stuff. When that changed is when my problem started. I’m going to be fully retired soon and do not want to burden my daughter with all this stuff. I can’t do much about my husbands stuff but I’m hoping he sees the progress and gets on board. What I see my main problem is not buying more stuff after I get rid of stuff. It’s a vicious cycle.
