I notice that most of these etiquette rules, not just in dining but in general, actually are practical and not just something to follow to be “proper”. For examples, waving the fork and knife in the air would pose a hazard, putting the utensils back on the mat would be unsanitary, bending down too low can hurt your back (and also would be dangerous if you get too close to the food especially if it’s hot), etc. These are pretty much based on maintaining safety and hygiene.
  • Is it just me or does anyone else instantly feels like straightening their back and putting a bit more effort into how they're going to present and eat their dinner? I always feel like getting a glimpse of royalty after watching Jamila's videos on etiquette. Beautifully done as always. I dream of this production for my own channel :)

I am not well off or wealthy by any means; I am simply middle class. I never go anywhere fancy to eat because of this but I still use your dining etiquette lessons when I am dining. Things I have noticed is that when I practice dining etiquette, even if the common person or waiter doesn’t understand what I’m doing, I look much more feminine and put together and I’ve noticed that doing these things commands more attention from my date and I get better service from my waiters and waitresses. Home training and soft skills truly benefit any woman in any situation
  • I like how polite and respectful you are! You are not criticizing, but rather giving useful suggestions on how to do things better

Jamila, I would like to know how to gracefully deal with little accidents that happen while dining. For example, when you drop a piece of food, if you drop your napkin or cutlery by accident, if you rip a stocking or whatever clumsy mistakes that could happen. It would be fun to watch and very educational 🤣.

In France, the etiquette says that fork and knife position in the plate also has a meaning. Crossing them like you did in the video means you have finished and... didn't enjoy your food 😛. Putting them in parallel means you liked it, and putting them perpendicularly means you would like to have the next dish. Making an A, means you are having a pause

For the people around us, it is fancy. My kids complain about having to learn to be fancy when no one else does it. My husband learned! He recently went to a business celebratory lunch and his friend/boss leaned in and asked my husband what fork he should start with :) My mom is Mexican but taught me the basic use of fork and knife as a kid (siblings and dad need etiquette classes!) I later learned the rest on my own. When we were dating, my husband’s family gave me the nickname “la duquesa” the duchess because I use a fork and knife lol.

This was so interesting! You addressed the issues very nicely and politely. Please do more reaction videos! :)

Im 38 and im from Portugal. I did learn a lot of these "table manners" has a child, especially from my dad. I believe he learned these rules with priests in his school, because his family was humble. I really proud of my dad and all he taught me. Great video, you gained another follower. Thank you and congrats on being so polite and thoughfull speaking of Hailey.

Elegance always makes a person look way better.
  • @momoblood
This is why i love your videos specifically, you educate us and talk about how to improve instead of mocking the person! That really talks about you and your professionalism, thank you! :)

I feel like the latest generation tries to come off as unassuming, authentic and friendly but they have lost the art of many etiquette rules that, when you think about it, are in place for the comfort of everyone at the table - and for your safety clearly. This is a nice reminder, as I myself tend to take heaps of food in my mouth and then blabber on in case I miss out on the conversations being had 🙈
  • @eileenm9252
Hailey is very animated and probably wasn’t as concerned with etiquette. She was still very charming and effortlessly beautiful. Still helpful to know these notes.

Jamila, thank you for this discussion about this video! I haven't seen any of the videos, but it's good to learn some etiquette from a natural situation. I started eating with a fork downward when I moved to England, although it was really difficult and I still struggle!
  • @jsuisravi
Awesome video! I would love to see more things like that in the future. I feel like in this day and age, there cannot be enough videos about etiquette in all kinds of restaurant, work/school, or travelling settings, etc., etc.
  • @Tchokwe
I am glad to know that there are still people like you who are concerned and interested in showing people the importance of how to behave at the table. However I think Haley did her role well. The video would lose its fun and spontaneity if she had to focus on the rules of etiquette.
  • @MiaAnstine
You are so kind in your reaction to this video. Thank you for the graceful education.
  • @Bluehoshiflower
Such an awesome video! I really like that you did not judge the "left-hand way" of eating.
