Got to wonder about the 4% that felt Brexit would be good for them. Hope there is an interview somewhere

Once again a display of why leaving the EU was such a dreadful idea.

If the British are serious about their sovereignty in these "territories", why don't they make them actual de jure parts of the UK, with MPs in the Commons?

The reality on the ground locally is that both sides of the border support open and easy crossing. So many Spanish families rely on income from Gibraltar and the Gibraltarians obviously don't want to end up living on an island. The economies of both sides are totally intertwined and mutually beneficial. But as always, high level politicians play their chess games without caring much about the people actually affected.

I don't usually bother to draw a line between patriotism and nationalism, but the approach of the hard right to this issue puts it in stark relief. They're more than happy to throw the people of Gibraltar under the bus in the name of some abstract construct of Britain and sovereignty. They only care about the power of the state, and are more than happy to sacrifice the people in its name.
  • I bet Irish nationalists and Spain couldn't believe their luck when Britain voted for brexit!

I am spanish and I don't want Gibraltar to be part of Spain, we actually benefit from having a land border with the UK and we don't need another separatist region. What the government should do is develop Algeciras, create jobs in the bay and impose the hard border that should exist between the EU and a non-EU territory.

"Impose" ??? There is no "imposing" anything to Gibraltar in the Spanish border. Because Spain owns it's own border. If there's no agreement, it's a legal requirement. Badly chosing word, falling into The Telegraph's rhetoric.

you see how right wing F everything up ...
  • There are two ways. One is separatism and Brexit, which makes life difficult in Gibraltar. Or a deal with Spain and Gibraltar as part of the EU, which makes things easier for the people in Gibraltar. In my opinion, citizens of Gibraltar can retain access to the Schengen area while other UK citizens remain excluded. This is a problem that London has to solve.
  • @djoldschool
Gibralta: ‘we want all the advantages of staying in the Schengen area but want to be fully British’. Spain and the EU: ‘fuck off’. Result - chaos. Anyone shocked/surprised at this needs a CAT scan.

You'd think that something like the withdrawal from the EU would be more thought out.
  • @Wouter10123
When is this happening? I need to visit Gibraltar before then.
