~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The banana king was one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. When a countryā€™s government didnā€™t give him what he wanted, he simply overthrew the government. He declared literal war on his competitors. And he built a gigantic business empire from nothing. You see, before he became the banana king, this man was simply known as Sam - an immigrant with no money, no connections, and no real hope. Samā€™s journey to building such a successful company is an astonishing underdog story. And throughout his life, Sam became entangled with countless famous figures, from US presidents to business magnates like JP Morgan. And yet it all begins, with ripe bananas.
However, I must warn you: what starts out as an inspirational success story will later take a much darker disturbing turn. As Sam became involved with an extremely controversial company called United Fruit, otherwise known as The Octopus - because of how they wrapped their tentacles around everyone, and caused devastating consequences.
Honestly, Iā€™ve covered a lot of fascinating business stories, but this is one of the craziest. You may never have heard the name Sam Zemurray before, but by the end of this video, youā€™ll be glad you did. This is the insane true story of the banana king - one of the craziest business stories!
THIS IS PART 1 OF A 2 PART MINI SERIES ON SAMUEL ZEMURRAY & THE BANANA BUSINESS.
This video is based on the book: ā€˜The fish that ate the whaleā€™. Normally I use 100s of different sources when writing these videos, but with this one, this particular book heavily inspired the video and so I encourage you to go check the book out for the full story.
    You should really do a story about billionaires that lose everything like Ireland's richest man who built a cement empire and then lost $6B through overly risky decisions and ended up back on the same street he grew up on. Seriously, not all big risks pay off and all these channels make it seem like big risks always = big rewards. There should really be at least a few realist stories about when big risks blow up. The cement guy had an amazing story, but the difference between him and this banana dude is that his big risks taken (while already rich) cost him his empire instead of growing it further. I'm just saying, perspective is important and we shouldn't overly glorify wild risk taking.
    This caught my attention because my Uncle Max also immigrated from Russia, arriving in Pittsburgh around 1930. After serving in the Army, he began a banana distributing business, and married my Dad's sister. They had a nice life, and I remember how positive & generous Max was, giving me a silver dollar every time we visited (mid - late 1950's). Sadly, he died of a heart attack at the age of 52. I was 10 years old, and I wish I had gotten to know him better, if he had not died so young.
    $150 in 1893 is equivalent to having $5085.15 today. You can do a lot with that money. The fact that he saved that much at a young age is impressive.
    ive heard about the banana massacre in the 1920's but to know where its all originating from is actually quite fascinating
    There's is a Dominican YouTube Channel run by a German guy who loves the country. He made a video about The Octopus and it's involvement on the governments. That video is focused on the actual fruit instead of the business so I'm glad you made this video so we can have a better understanding.
  • @KarmaHoax
    That was fantastic. Looking forward to part two now! Keep on grindin'!
    Banana man's story sounds like it could make for a really fun video game. The logistics involved are fascinating.
  • @joshuaneilson
    He wasnā€™t in the banana business or the money business, heā€™s in the empire business
