How do you rapidly grow a retail business from a single shop in Richmond to a High Street empire of more than 2,500 stores?

By using a strategy of business acquisition over organic growth.

When Gerald Ratner was looking to expand his jewellery retail business he understood that acquiring and merging business, often competitors, was the fastest path to build a dominant brand.

Although the comeback story of one of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs has been well-told, the story of how he built a business empire with 2,500 stores and £1.2 billion in sales shows how acquisition can be a better strategy than organic growth.

I recently invited Gerald to speak with me at one of my Mastermind events. We have today published a video on my YouTube channel where he explains how he used acquisition and aggressive marketing to grow and dominate his sector.

It is worth watching if you are still not convinced that acquisition is a better way to grow a business.

In this video, you will discover…

- How Gerald had a masterstroke and moved to buy his fiercest competitor to grow the business
- Why he believes that there is no competition between acquisition and organic growth
- Why the combination of acquisition and aggressive marketing proved a winner in the market
- The highly unusual and creative way Gerald bought his competitor’s business when he couldn’t get financing

Followed Gerald for years - he sounds a bit cockney gangster here compared to older videos I've seen ! Brilliant interview focusing much more on the detail of the journey. Love the story of getting control of HS.

That thought on systems was poignant. The small details create huge leverage points.
  • First video i've seen of yours and just want to say thank you! This is amazing content

Anyone know the watch - is it a Cartier? Like it a lot
  • This is the point: starting a business is for youngsters: once something goes wrong you still have time and health to face a big problem and sort it out_ despite the fact that LUCK always plays an immense role in it.

The text is annoying! But an interesting video

Aquisition will always be the only way for someone who thinks aggressive marketing is offering 50% off… nailed discount retail, but not overly sophisticated 😂

He was also connected. Forgets to mention that part
