I was a Marine scout sniper with the 5th Marine regiment in Vietnam from October 1967 to November 1968. Chuck Mawhinney joined the platoon in 1969 a few months after I rotated home. We met at a sniper reunion in Florida in 2014. Having missed the Battle for Hue during the TET Offensive of February 1968, Chuck wanted to know about the target environment. When I told him about the number of confirmed kills we had that month he was sick. There were two Divisions of North Vietnamese Army regulars in Hue when the 5th Marines fought their way into the city. My sniper platoon provided overwatch for the Regiment and most of us had dozens of confirmed KIAs.
  • My Dad was a Sniper in the Air Force Security Service in case they came under fire, because all of them had thousands of dollars on their heads. When he taught me to hunt, it freaked me out how he could never miss the smallest target from any distance. He taught me some stuff, but I never had the gift that he had.

I served as a Infantry / Sniper for the U.S. Army in Iraq. Most of the missions were attached to platoons for their patrols, and in that capacity to provide them the extra layer of protection that our optics, weapons and training can provide. This includes overwatch for Traffic Control Points and Raids. Beyond that, we typically deployed in areas of interest as a 2-to-4-man Sniper Team to gather intelligence, and if the opportunity arises and is to our advantage interdict targets of value. We used ghillie suits in the fields, and prepared hides in buildings for the cities. We rarely if ever do the long John Wayne movie style missions. That's the myth we had to overcome, and train our leaders to implement Sniper Teams in practical terms. Our unit took part in the 2nd Battle of Fallujah, we dug in and held a bridge the enemy was hell bent on escaping through. We held. Later on, we owned sections of Baghdad along Route Irish (the Airport to Green Zone highway), and in short order put fear into the hearts of the Insurgents. I loved my job, and I was proud to do it. I had no problem laying down my life for those with me, and taking the lives of those who sought to do us harm. That's the job, and I was good at it. I went on to further deployments to Pakistan to train alongside their Special Service Group, and spent my last deployment as Special Operations Intelligence Sergeant (SOT-A Member). No greater friend, no fiercer enemy. SSG. U.S. Army (Medically Retired) Infantry / Sniper / SOF Intel (SOT-A), multiple tours

Some of these shots are really amazing, especially when you consider that the bullet transitions from supersonic to transonic during long flights and when the shock wave detaches from the bullet it causes some destabilization of the projectile.
