Midway on June 4, 1942 was a decisive battle of the Pacific War. Lt. Richard Best is in Squadron Six(VB-6) of the USS Enterprise Air flying an SBD Dauntless bomber. The Americans are going up against the mighty Japanese fleet also known as the Kidō Butai. On this day, Best and his SBD Dauntless will take part in the sinking of 2 of the 4 Japanese carriers lost in the battle. The Akagi went down as a result of Best's accurate bomb drop and his was one of four bombs that saw the end of the Hiryū. The loss of these ships was a shattering blow for the Japanese High Command

It's incredible how Richard Halsey Best was able to strike and destroy two aircraft carriers in the same day. Had he'd not been forced out of active combat service following this battle due to medical complications, there's no doubt in my mind he would have achieved many more great military feats in his life.

I'm Japanese. Thank you for making such a stunning video. Even as an enemy, I'm happy to see our animated Japanese Carriers. I wish for both country's friendship forever.

There were so many crazy coincidences that lead to the devastation of the Kidō Butai, and if only a single one of those coincidences didn't happen the outcome could have been vastly different. Mad respect to the airmen who fought over Midway that day. This battle was the turning point of the war in the Pacific. I highly recommend checking out a 3 part series by "Montemayor" who goes into full detail of all the events that led up to the American victory at Midway.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

Honestly, for me it doesn't matter that the Essex class carriers were better, more well equipped, more guns and planes to carry, all that stuff but I don't fucking care: Yorktown class for life! Sad that CV-5 and 8 both sunk in battle but the saddest is that Enty was scrapped. If only she could have been saved...

All those match up with historical photos scenes always gives me goosebumps! These were real stuff we're watching here!!!

This is the best Yarnhub video I've ever watch, the detail of every pilot backstory and perspective of their journey in the Pacific and the iconic Midway battle. Keep it up Yarnhub and we'll support your channel.

I cannot believe this channel went from 2D animations to fully rendered movie level animations. The small details are so good!! Keep up the amazing work!!

“Props” to the person who transitioned the desk fan to the aircraft propeller. 😅👍 2:21
  • i can never understand how every single time you guys make a video, the quality increases! I have been watching since the start of this channel and i am proud to say that. You guys have gotten me through my toughest times. Thank you yarnhub!

One thing that I think cannot be forgotten about this battle: while several waves of US aircraft attacked the fleet and were destroyed with negligible damage done, every one of them kept the Japanese from being able to rearm and launch their next wave, and each one forced Zeros to dive down and pursue. By the time the critical bomber groups arrived, the Zero air cover were out of position near the water and low on fuel and ammo.

McClusky was previously a fighter pilot who has escorted dive bombers before so he was very familiar with the dive bombing doctine which does allow the leader to use their judgement to select which target to attack in addition to recommending the furthermost target. He went for the closer Kaga because it appeared no one knew they were there yet and he directed Best to attack the Akagi but with their radios are like walkie talkies, if you talk into the radio you cannot hear anything

Due to lung injuries incurred by a defective oxygen system, this would be the last time he flew for the Navy and he was subsequently medically retired. Despite sinking two Japanese aircraft carriers in a single day, he never received the Medal of Honor he so richly deserved. All the same, he was the Best the Navy ever had.

First animation to bring a tear to my eye in a long time. As an Englishman, the fight the Americans went through in the Pacific was hideous, but you did it. God speed, and Rest in Peace to all those who were lost.

The success of the dive bombers at Midway was a stroke of wild fortune; the defending fighters were so busy defending the carriers and ripping apart torpedo bombers, they didn't have time to react or climb to meet the dive bombers. Plus, the reason the bombs were so effective is that the Japanese were in the middle of rearming and refueling their fighters from the ground assault on Midway Island, so when the bombs detonated, the explosions were exacerbated by all the munitions and fuel active on the flight deck. Edit: What else made this battle so nuts is that the Japanese kept running into issues; there was the dilemma of the fighters returning from the island ground assault needing to refuel and rearm vs the defending fighters also needing to land for those reasons, and there's also the Japanese pilots mistakenly thinking they had sunk the Yorktown and erroneously assuming they had been damaging multiple carriers. Really, the Battle of Midway is an excellent showing of why Japanese military doctrine was inevitably going to lose to American military doctrine.

I'm fortunate enough to have been on Midway Atoll recently. There are still bullet holes in the sea plane hanger and cracks in the concrete from bombs
  • @frankydman
Something to think about as far as the Battle of Midway goes: Akagi took what was essentially one well placed bomb it, and was rendered a total loss Yorktown took 3 bombs, was repaired, then took 2 torpedos and still didn’t sink. Had the submarine I-168 not come later and struck her with 4 more torpedoes she probably would have survived. Goes to show- the superiority of American carrier design and damage control vs the Japanese counterparts
  • @Orca4135
There is more to the story, Richard Halsey Best’s oxygen mask was hooked up incorrectly, and it was feeding him gas fumes. He was hospitalized, and made a partial recovery, but after that day he never flew again. It’s sad after he did everything right, and single-handedly changed the course of the war in the pacific, that he would get sick like that, but sometimes life does that. It honestly makes me look up to him even more, because of all he sacrificed.

Another incredible video. Something that I am reminded of when ever I hear about Midway is a quote I read from Admiral Yamamoto. He said to the Imperial Japanese Command that he could guarantee victory after victory for the first six months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but saw only uncertainty after that. Midway happened just three days shy of the six months Yamamoto predicted. Timing on history is often the deciding factor between victory and defeat, and this one battle proves just that.
