Robert E. Lee's Time Capsule (The Civil War Diaries S3E4)

On October 27, 1887 a copper time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the Robert E. Lee monument’s pedestal in Richmond, Virginia. What was inside??
Records from the Library of Virginia suggest that 37 Richmond residents, organizations, and business contributed about 60 objects to the capsule, real, tangible artifacts of both Richmond and America’s history.
On June the 4, 2020, however, Virginia governor Ralph Northam announced that the Robert E. Lee monument in Richmond,along with all other statues along monument avenue that had been erected to commemorate Civil War Veterans would be removed and on September 8, 2021 crews from the city executed the governor’s orders bringing the history of Monument Avenue to a close.
In an effort to further destroy the historic integrity of the site, Governor Northam announced plans to replace the 134-year old time capsule embedded in the pedestal with a new time capsule that was deemed more representative of modern culture in Virginia and more palatable to modern society as a whole.
Thankfully crews were unable to locate the original time-capsule and so it remains in it’s rightful place as a part of Virginia and our countries history.
But what was inside?
This newspaper article from Late October of 1887 provides a list of the articles placed in the copper box.

How poignant. Nothing but Honor. As an unaologetic Yankee, with an Uncle who died consequent to fighting at Gettysburg, I have nothing but respect for General Lee and his Monument. May the day come soon when it is restored to its proper site.

They say it's not an erasing of history. Can you imaging if the statues of ancient Egypt and Greece, and Rome had been torn down how much history would have been lost. This cannot be allowed to happen without a fight.

Sad times for the Old Dominion and as a former long time resident, I'm afraid that only something major will bring it back to the great state it once was. As I live here in Richmond it was a sad day when Lee came down.

The Union & Confederate old Veterans came together and shook hands in Brotherly Respect while they were alive. If they could do it, people today should be able to.

I'm born, raised and still in Virginia. Northern Virginia is ruining this historic state. And I hate it. The brave and hard fighting veterans from here have rolled over in their graves. And it's very, very sad.

I'm a proud Southerner from Tennessee, I'd just like to add, When my daughter was in elementary school, her teacher showed a picture of Mr.Lee . Then asked if anyone knew who he was or anything about him. My daughter was the only one to raise her hand. Then told the teacher, Sure do, that's my Papaw , his picture is in our living room. She came home asking alot of questions, but I was really proud. She was really young, but I will never forget that, nor does she. Still calls him Papaw Lee.

A few years ago I visited Gettysburg and found my ancestors names on the North and the South monuments! I thought it was pretty amazing my Grandfather told me they didn't even know they were fighting each other! This summer I finally got to visit Virginia, it was very chilling to see the battlefields of New Market, Front Royal, Cold Harbor, etc.. I did bypass Charlottesville, I will just have to read books and watch video of that one!
