John MacEwan was born in September 1823 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married Agnes Duncan on November 28, 1846, in his hometown. About 1851/1852 they set sail for the U.S and settled in Fall River, Mass along w. their 3 or 4 year old daughter, Margaret. Then they had five more children. Two of their children died in Fall River, Mass. & buried there then the bodies were moved to Albany. They moved to Cohoes, NY area about 1870..Eventually they moved the remains of their two children (who died at age 5 & age 2) to their plot in the Albany rural cemetery. They lost two adult children, one before they passed, and one after both were farely young... One son was deemed "idiotic" and died of parallysis at the age of 31...The plot was purchased by John when his 31 year old son died. A Scottish family Crest is shown on the MacEwan headstone.

John MacEwan died on November 8, 1893, in Cohoes, New York, at the age of 70, and is buried in Menands, New York where there is a large family plot. It is located across the road from the Paterson plot. His daughter Jean & her husband Andrew Paterson and family.

Both plots/headstones face each other w. a road that divides them.
