What To Avoid If You Are Taking SSRI Antidepressants (ex. Sertraline, Fluoxetine) – Foods and Beverages, Herbal Supplements and Prescription Medications that Interact with SSRIs

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) are medications used to treat disorders of depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia. However, their use can cause side effects along with the symptoms of antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and serotonin syndrome. There are a variety of dietary factors, herbal supplements and other medications that can interact with SSRIs to worsen side effects.

Thank goodness we have medications like SSRIs. My quality of life is better. If i had of been sick 100 years ago, I would have been locked up for life.
  • @katel3962
Wow! No doctor has ever mentioned this when prescribing meds.
  • @Jennifer-bw7ku
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
  • @catmom1322
As a neuroscientist, I find this very informative. You were able to catch a lay audience & as a registered nurse who studied neuroscience in my doctoral program, you did a great job explaining this. Thanks!
  • I feel like, especially these days, everybody is struggling with mental health and could benefit from careful/ intentional therapeutic use of substances like these.
  • @jennybeanSMC
I feel like doctors should be required to hand out a booklet or go over this information when prescribing antidepressants. I've been on Citalopram for years and didn't know about some of this.
  • @TheSaltySiren
What the heck?!???? I worked in a Psychiactric hospital, and I can’t even begin to tell you how blown away I am! None of our pharm classes included any of this information. We had numerous patients on The anti-psychotics mentioned here as well as the mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety meds you mentioned AND SSRI’s! How did the Psych doctors not catch this?!?? It makes so much sense as to why our patients reacted the way they did. I’m blown away.

Nobody told me long term use of anti-depressants can deplete the body of vitamins and possibly lead to thyroid disruption. After I was diagnosed with low thyroid, I was told I should have been taking a daily vitamin B.
  • My best advice to people taking any type of medication is to do research on it. Don’t expect the doctor or pharmacist to tell you much. It’s your body and you are responsible for your share. I’ve been on medication that messed up my bones and I learned the hard way, now I question everything.
  • @AmyAndThePup
I never knew that about NSAIDs. I knew about MAOs, St. John's, did not know about 5HTP. I'm surprised at how little of this was actually shared with me over the years, except for interactions with other SSRIs, because of needing to tweak meds in the past. Thank you so much for this video.
  • I've been taking Celexa for over 20 years, 10mg/day for the first dozen or so and 20mg/day for nearly ten. Two years into initial treatment I read an article on SSRIs that listed a side effect of some as reducing migraine incidents. I'd suffered from migraines for over 40 years, never going a week or a month without one or occurring several days in a row at the same time of day or night. I realized I hadn't had one since taking the meds, and at 71 I still haven't.
  • @EmmieHunny
This is a great style of video. Informative, gets right into it, and covers a broad range. Thanks!
  • @crushingit5128
This is information that a majority of physicians don't know anything about. But will gladly prescribe you a SSRI
  • @lin82
thank you so much. nobody ever told me about these. I've been on antidepressants since 15 and I've always taken ibuprofen, and wondered why i would feel worse. so glad i saw this video.
  • @sanaon7453
Man, you're on a roll with these videos! Just in time to review these concepts for my exam. Thanks, JJ Medicine!
  • @Dsquaredforever
Great video! Thanks for putting all of this in one easy to digest resource. Much appreciated.
  • @adhdhikaru
I ended up getting a rare side effect of sertraline: significant worsening of short term memory. It got to the point where, within the 5 months I took it for, I can only remember very few bits and pieces of the last 4 months before switching; everything is basically blank for me for the last 3 months, save a few horrible moments of emotional despair. Now I'm on escitalopram, with no signs of those side effects thank god.
  • @nobattles4322
I started out on Buspar then wellbutrin and finally in 2011 Quetiapine the latter was a life saver, I'm still taking it. Thankfully I haven't needed any of the other medications you pointed out. The video was very informative!
  • @carmenh1863
Escalitopram has improved my life massively. Thank you for your very clear well explained video.
  • @helengrunow5094
