In Russia there's a tradition of the "semistrunnaya gitara", a seven string guitar tuned to open G (D G B D G B D). It's a wonderful sound, here's Evgeny Ryzhov playing variations on the theme of the Russian folk song "Here comes the postal troika."

Somewhat surprised but really gladdened by this transcription! ❤ Some of my favourite romantic repertoire is from the semystrunka tradition, especially variation pieces. And I've always had a softer spot for the Russian compared to the Viennese and Spanish styles. Pity the tradition was almost wiped out by the Soviets (as it had been associated with imperial army officers). I wholeheartedly recommed Oleg Timofeyev and John Schneidermann's 1800-1850 album to all interested. And I believe that Rob MacKillop and mr Timofeyev have some videos about this tradition in English on YouTube.

Very beautiful playing. Great piece to learn if you want to get out of a rut!

Love that he's performing it in a concrete stairwell. Chucked out of the party early on.

I have an Ibanez qx527 tuned similarly with the d strings sharpened for symmetry... Augmented tuning.
