1959 Chevrolet Apache Truck with 353 Detroit Diesel Engine and two transmissions.
Here's a look at the truck I had for almost 35 years before giving it back to my brother.
1959 Chev 1 ton 9 foot long box, step side.
Pulled the gas engine out in the spring of 1991 and replaced it with an aluminum block 353 Detroit Diesel engine. Discovered right away it was too slow & added another transmission to speed it up a bit.
Looking forward to firing it up and taking it for a spin & make a video of it's glorious sound soon.

  • So essentially it has 3 overdrive gears, that is awesome! The idea of putting another transmission backwards behind the original one sounds so absurd and yet it works! I would’ve never come up with this. well done, very ingenious

Honestly, I couldn’t hit like fast enough. What an amazing, strong old rig. Wow wow.

That dual trans idea is absolutely awe striking to me. I like to think I tend to think outside the box on ingenuitive ways to fab existing parts together, but this beats all. Very good idea! Please make a video running it. Thanks.

Oh, I've no doubt it can be done- I've thought of doing it myself! Never did though. NEAT to see someone who actually carried it out! LOVE the truck!

I would like to see a video of it running and going down the road this truck is cool
  • Now that’s very clever and simple to follow Well done Love to hear it run

Grand pa had a 1954 international 4x4 with a 4 cylinder perkins in it. Ordered it that way top speed of 43 mph but it would pull Michael Moore away from a donut.

My daily driver is a 1959 1 ton Chevy panel truck. It's been in the family since 1971. I've had it since 1985 and still use it every day to pull a trailer and work out of with my lawn service. Those old Chevies were well built and meant for work. 1 tons from back then, both pick-ups and panels are also very rare. Your brother has a very nice truck there.

If you dont like that truck there is something wrong with you
  • @FarmAlarm
I'm very impressed with your ingenuity. That is how things use to get done, Where there is a will, there is a way! Good gob 👍

Some of the smartest people around are farmers. My Dad grew up on a farm. He could fix or build anything too. The real Heart of America. Thank you for showing us your great old truck. Beautiful.

A library of Hollander interchange books, and some good ol Yankee ingenuity has served me well my 62 years of making things work. My hats off to you sir.
  • @FrigidFrosty
love that truck. Great job putting a Detroit in it and two Transmissions.
  • That's a dream truck right there! You've basically got yourself a scaled down semi. And the back to back transmission thing is genius! That may be an option for making my old Ford go faster. I love having the low gearing. I stick it in first and could probably pull a down house, but I feel like the 352 is gonna explode if I push it past 60mph. It's annoying going so slow when everyone else is flying past you at 80+.
  • @jonnyrox116
Thanks for that sir, those old 353 2strokes were known as runaway motors...seemed to have a mind of their own and enough power to convince you! Thanks again for showing us

Some people like the art of Van Gogh. You, sir, are an artist named Truck GO!! That's some beautiful engineering! Kinda sad, though. I came here to hear the sweet sound of a Detroit!!
  • @jerryhayden8720
Fantastic 👍!!! I had heard some truckers talking on the cb when I started driving otr 28 years ago and I remember hearing 2 or 3 or, can't remember, I've slept a few times, lol😆 anyway they said something about turning around backwards another transmission making a overdrive. To this day I thought they were full of 💩. I couldn't fathom such. You sir have truly enlightened me. FANTASTIC I haven't even got out of bed yet and I've already learned something. Thank you. Excellent engineering 👍. Great work.

That Sir is one SWEET looking old piece of iron. My Father had a 58 Apache with a 235 6 cylinder and a 3 on the tree. Loved that old truck. Mighty fine job you did.
