The original Lion King is 30 years old! Wow. And yet somehow, it is still relevant. Breaking records back in the 1990s, and breaking records in the 2010s, it's clear the Lion King as a franchise has quite the interesting history. An underdog story, turned top dog story. But with Disney doing their Disney thing, and clearly making a lot of profit from it. Looking back over the last 30 years for this retrospective, I can't help but ask: Is The Lion King's Legacy RUINED 30 Years Later...? Come see our full thoughts for yourself...

Or maybe Mufasa will define the Lion King franchise. What are your thoughts for the quality of that movie?
  • @trinaq
Happy 30th Anniversary, Lion King! I don't think that the movie's reputation is ruined, since it still holds up, and is as beloved as ever.

The original's legacy is still alive, the new live action stuff ain't canon in my eyes
  • The Lion King remake is just a remake. We can just forget about that one and stick with the original.
  • @mjolnair
Did anyone find it odd that in the 2016 jungle book the animals have facial expressions but the lion king remake doesn’t
  • @greganims
The nostalgia of rewatching lion king is unbeatable

YMS completely debunked the whole "Lion King ripped off of Kimba" thing. Seriously, go watch his video on it, it's incredibly well done!

Excited to see Zazu’s origin story in 2029 if this one succeeds.
  • @unicornpupart
i will always prefer their 2d hand-drawn expressive motion animation over any of their live actions
  • @BROWNSMAGIC
Somebody didn’t watch YMS kimba video 🥱
  • No, the legacy isn’t ruined, stop clickbaiting. Just because the live action stuff is bad, it doesn’t ruin the original 💀

Regardless, the 1994 Lion King is the highest grossing animated film of the twentieth century, and at the time I was eight years old. When I first saw the Lion King when it premiered, I was blown away, and I had seen all of the Disney renaissance films in the cinema, I saw this film with my mother, and my cousins, then a second time with my father and my best friend, at school, everyone had seen it too, and the Lion King was a big part of our interactions, then came the merchandising, and I still have some of this 90s merch. As for the Kimba plagiarism controversy, you are wrong Dazz, you are comparing an anime TV series, to a feature length animated film, if you have seen Kimba, you would know it's episodic, story arcs were not yet part of anime, so the themes and plots differ from episode to episode, so it's impossible for the Lion King to do something, not already covered by Kimba, for more information, I recommend watching Adum of YMS, he addresses the causes and the motivations behind the controversy, and debunks the arguments made by the "Kimba Crowd", similarities alone are not enough to prove plagiarism. In summary, Kimba acknowledges but does not honour Africa, the Lion King play homage and honours Africa, I would also like to recommend "Timon and Pumbaa" the Disney afternoon TV show, the Disney renaissance was also on the small screen too.
  • Maybe Disney could save themselves if they actually listened to people and brought 2d back
  • 8:20 this has already been debunked very thoroughly by a youtuber called YMS. Kimba fans were just salty
  • Woo, 30 years; 3 whole decades! Let that sink in your head for a few moments. 😅 But I don’t really think that its reputation’s really tainted, I’d say it still lives up to its name.

My twin bro said the "live action" version was better than the og animated one 😭😭😭
  • Kimba and The Lion King are very different. The only thing that's similar between the two are the fact that the protagonist is a lion. That's it
