Original Description:

Step inside the pitch meeting that led to CATS!

The internet had a ton of fun when the first trailer for CATS was released, revealing the true fear that is digital fur technology. With an all-star cast featuring the likes of Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Rebel Wilson and more- CATS is the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Now that the movie is out, the few people that paid money to see it probably have a few questions. Like what is “Jellicle” and why do they keep saying it?! What’s up with all these cats introducing themselves and then leaving. Why are some cats magic and others not? Why are all these cats competing in a singing competition where the prize is dying?

To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to the CATS!

    What a jellical revisit!

Producer Guy's descent into insanity during this Pitch Meeting is hilarious. From confused to insane in 5 minutes.
  • I died at "Can you please not answer this question" and Ryan's gaze into the audience hahaha
May you live a long life mr George

Fun fact: You watch these movies so that we don’t have to. That is the reason some of the most terrible movies are your most successful Pitch meetings.

"The Jellical hypnosis has taken effect"

Has to be one of the most terrifying things ever said in a pitch meeting

The pitch meeting for this film is more popular than the actual film because people wanted confirmation of how awful and creepy looking it is without wasting time watching it and getting traumatised 😅

This was the pitch meeting that introduced me to pitch meetings!! I had just seen "Cats" and I was so disoriented and felt so crazy, I had to see if folks on YouTube felt the same way. And, lo and behold, my Pitch Meetings journey began!

I'm pretty sure all of those cats wanted to die because they were in the movie Cats which sounds like a horror beyond all imagination.
  • @mcolville
I know it's a catchphrase and Ryan must be sick to death of it, but "Actually it's gonna be super easy! Barely an inconvenience!" still brings me joy.
  • That theater mix-up is one of the better stories I've heard from anyone in quite a while

Although the etymology of the word is not given in Cats, or just about anywhere else, it comes from a poem by Eliot called “Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats,” and Pollicle is a pet form of poor little, and Jellicle is a pet form of dear little.
  • Those human-cockroach mutants had a bigger effect on me, than any horror movie in the last decade. Absolute nightmare fuel....
  • Ryan telling the story about the kids in the movie theater felt like a stand up comedy routine and now I’m wanting more of that content
  • @theColeHardTruth
There is a substantial chance that between the original and the revisit that this pitch meeting has been viewed more times than the actual Cats movie, and that gives me hope for humanity.

Wow I had no idea digitally removing buttholes was such a major drain on Hollywood. But I guess that's just part of the art making process. I had no idea the buttholes were so difficult to properly light! Fireflies make it look so easy! What a jellicle leason we all learned here today! ❤😂
  • @braydengrant1046
The fact that a movie theater does that to its customers is just insane
  • Apparently "The name "Jellicle" comes from an unpublished poem by Eliot entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats", where "Pollicle dogs" is a corruption of "poor little dogs" and "Jellicle cats" of "dear little cats""

'Cats' was actually the first Pitch Meeting I saw! My partner at the time showed it to me because we both thought the whole trainwreck of it was hilarious, and I was instantly hooked. Because it was new to me I didn't realise "super easy, barely an inconvenience" was a running gag and it just blew me away how funny it was.

Definitely one of my favorites. "Wow, okay, I didn't understand any of this". "I feel completely insane, I've lost my sanity, it's gone"
