Another problem I have is they seem to put a lot of the emotional weight on the comic- only OCs. So if you don't give a crap about Tangle, Whisper, Belle, Lanolin, Kit, Surge etc then the emotional stuff might not register. They are allowed to cry and feel sad and all that, the game characters always seem more even feeling to neutral and rarely show extreme emotional range because honestly they don't have any personal stakes. Sega won't allow it. None of the game characters can die and I think they aren't allowed to form deep friendships with other characters so it all feels rather clinical and fake. The game characters fight to save the world because that's in the script, not because they have families to care about, because they don't have those things. The closest I think we ever got to emotional strain on the game characters was the Metal Virus arc which is one reason why I like that arc. After that they all feel neutral all the time.

imo i wouldnt have an issue with the smaller plots if it wasnt so directionless, they just feel like a comic dub comp

IDW comics are simple a mess. Too many characters in a little space, and focus on each. You wonder who you need to care about. Sonic who is not so gentle and not so carefree. Lack of space for the titular characters (Sonic) and lots of space especially for the OCs. Shadow who lost all his neurons, being at his worst in the zombie saga. Too many OCs who lack of charisma and that pop up almost everywhere. It totally lacks of balance. And so on. The Scrapnick Island worked because of a more balanced plot and few characters to focus on (Sonic, Tails and Mecha Sonic). Same issues with Archie Comics.

I don't know why you label these as video essays. Yes the term essay itself is rather vague but in terms of video essays there are some expectations like a point or a theme that is developed with multiple aspects that are proven with evidence. This is just a review essentially; you go over the comics and give your mild opinions.

I feel like the more laid back fun adventure stories tend to work better because there's only so far they can go with the more intense high stakes ones. SEGA have HUGE limits on what the comics can do with the SEGA cast, hence the original characters taking up a lot of the emotional weight (the same was true for later Archie admitedly, just those OCs had legacy via the cartoons most of the time).  I think it's why the Metal Virus arc kinda waned on people, the attempts to make Eggman commit ultimate evil fall kinda flat because he and Sonic are stuck in a loop, the comic tries to lampshade it as a mediator but it only goes so far. Urban Warfare almost felt like some attempt at a finale, where Eggman finally pushes Sonic too far and gets his long deserved sticky end, but things are back to normal afterwards and really EVERYONE knew they would be. There isn't much catharsis to this setup, hence it tending to be better when they just go for light hearted adventures, since they can use those to their greater potential.

All this criticism for IDW for doing and having great issues and moments for characters and Sonic gets bashed by everyone when Archie Sonic has more problems and deserves more criticism and the worst version of Sonic is BOOM, Archie, Fleetway and Prime

Tbh there still isn’t really that much issues with the IDW Sonic comics (which both Tangle and Whisper still will always be my favorites that I love) rather than the Archie Sonic comics themselves.

I think the world is too shallow, and needs a more bad guys so it isn't eggman all the time.

they'd better not fail, and at the very least make an entire saga set almost entirely in outer space and on alien planets. and just so you know, i'll continue to sees issue after issue of sonic idw on youtube until it's conclusion, even if what follows during the whole Clutch thing fails in the eyes of anyone else

Its sega's restrictions that hold back the potential of the comics more than the comic writers themselves I believe

As long as the Freedom Fighters don't appear, the comics will stay perfect, I've even read issues 1-68 (waiting for Issue 69).

I have mixed feelings about IDW Sonic. I do like some things like the new characters and all especially Surge and Whisper and Tangle. But they getting more screentime then Sonic and his crew lately and thats not good when it has his name on the damn cover. Tangle and whipsers new miniseries sold horribly from what Ive been hearing and IDW just lost the rights to transformers and GI joe cuz of terrible sales as everything's online now and nobody buys physical copies of comics no more.All it has is sadly is great artwork and barely a story. I didnt mind the Metal Virus because that had an actual plot but the newer ones just come and go with no idea of what to do next.I like Ian Flynn but he needs to stop screwing around and focus on an actual functioning plot.
