i think people forget how well paced FMAB is FMA as a whole manage to complete alot in a relatively short amount of time. Think of most anime or manga you are reading right now. Do you think it can accomplish as much as what FMA does in 64 episodes? It doesnt have the need to stretch out endlessly, or have fights lasting way longer than it need to be. It know exactly where it need to end and was able to optimize it in a near perfect length

Frieren isn't a prologue though. It's an epilogue.

- Frieren didn't have a tournament arc. They really didn't have to fight each other to pass in any of the exams, but some people chose to fight. Even more, the last part of the exam was just an interview, not fights at all, contrary to any other generic tournament arc in any other shounen. - The point of the exam was to pass throught easly the restricted area which is necessary to reach Ende (final destination). There were other options in case they failed. Also, Frieren wanted Fern being promoted to first class mage. - The side characters weren't pointless. Most of them will show again. - Frieren story still holds up great in the manga, in fact the arguably best arc is yet to come in season two (El Dorado Arc).

Ah yes, the eternal (current) debate I'd give it to FMAB as of now just because it's a great complete package. But I can see Frieren overtaking it when it's finished.

As someone who loves both series I gotta give it to FMA since it's finished and has stood the test of time.
