1987 Schwinn Tempo - 35th Anniversary Edition

Published 2023-08-16
I purchased a used and well-worn 1987 Schwinn Tempo in 2022 as a restoration project to bring back a piece of nostalgia from my childhood. The Tempo was my very first road bicycle when I was 14 years old and I road that bike hard and fast for many years.

With the restoration completed approximately 35 years after 1987, I dubbed this bike a "35th Anniversary Edition". It's too bad the Schwinn company as we know it doesn't really exist anymore as many bike companies, especially those in the BMX industry, ARE recreating their older bikes as "heritage editions".

Having never done a complete repaint of a bike frame before, I'm quite pleased with the end result. The color is Montana Cans "Carribean Metallic" and the seat tube is DupliColor "Pearl White". The decals are from VeloCals.com which unfortunately went out of business at the end of 2022.

Very nice! This was my first road bike too. When I was 14! lol Lots of memories seeing this beautiful restoration. I fell in love with the feel of the SLR brakes. I remember contemplating between the pink Centurion Dave Scott and the Tempo back in 1987.

I got the teal/white 1987 Tempo for Christmas. I just got one stock in mint condition. The rims don't even have brake pad wear. It's been sitting in a barn outside of St. Louis.

I think VO makes a suede (or suede-like) saddles. I am looking at an '87 Schwinn Tempo on my local craigslist for $250. Someone swapped out the drops for flatbars, but everything else appears original and in great condition. Would probably have some new wheels built as well. My first drop bar bike was an 1989 Dave Scott Master Centurion. I'm now riding a 2021 Ritchey Logic, but would really love a vintage steel frame bike for L'Eroica and other fun rides.

I hated the brake wear on the anodized rims on my first one. I'm about to look into to see if there are brake pads that won't do that on my new one's rims.
