08 was the biggest change in game play. they introduced a proper cycle system and defence actually stayed in position on the blueline

2004 had a graphics glitch, but it was also experimenting with more advanced graphics. It was the first one to have the lights reflecting off of the ice, which would have been considered cutting edge stuff at the time.

After playing 22 for a while I went back to 17 and 18 and man, it's so much better and more fun in every possible way (BaP with realistic sliders), the presentation, animations (don't remember if I've ever seen a player smoothly catching the puck with glove and throwing it down in later ones), deflections, scoreboard isn't at the fking bottom obscuring the ice when behind the net, the net fucking MOVES when scoring etc. etc. About the oldest ones: I played since 96 and remember 98 and 99 to be the most fun, 97 was too simple with controls and everything, then from 2000 onwards until 04 or so it felt off somehow and simplified. If I had to pick, the best whole package for me was 98, best intro (though 97 and 99 were also great), best controls, best fights where you could do more stuff than any other nhl game after. I guess the same can be applied to Fifa, 98 had the most tricks and was a lot of fun, then 99 and 2000 came and basically it was just running forward and most goals looked the same, stopped playing after 02 cause I wasn't having fun at all.

97 was underrated and addicting. 2001 had the best hitting engine. 2004 best soundtrack
