I just have to clear the air here - her having been an atheist has nothing to do with her societal, family expectations to be “smart” and much less with her use of illegal drugs. My spouse was an atheist but at the same time the most spiritual person I have ever known, with his unconditional love, detachment from materialism, humility, compassion, kindness, and respect for all. He never succumbed to the expectation to be a cut-throat materialistic person. He was happy to just love and help others throughout his entire life, in every way he could. And he never tried one drop of alcohol, ever tasted tobacco or any kind of illegal drugs. I was also an atheist and have never tried illegal drugs and I also try to be kind to others. I have found that dogma teaches us to be unkind and judgmental. Look at our current political/cultural situation. I consider myself spiritual now, and I’m convinced there is more to this physical world and I will see the love of my life again. So please don’t assign a negative a light to those who reject religion and dogma. We all just do the best we can and we all have different journeys in life.
