A set screw in the hub of the gear directly above the key, with a properly sized key and keyway should work. You might need to open up the keyways to the next size for a proper fit.

That's a lot of slop if you are going to work on the motor on the stand. I had a 64' cutlass in high school that would for some reason eat the crankshaft key at the vibration dampener. I made a slightly oversized key, chamfered one end, and drove it in with a hammer. Crude but solved a similar problem. You could add a couple small tack welds too.

Is that play not just lose gear mesh? Not the key?
