As few as 4,000 snow leopards are left in the wild. As snow leopards kill domestic livestock in their habitat, conflicts with impoverished herder communities in the high mountains of Asia are threatening these shy, elusive cats.

But there is an innovative and effective solution to these conflicts: a community-run livestock insurance scheme, supported and funded by the Snow Leopard Trust and its donors, helps herder families insure their precious animals and receive compensation when they lose an animal to an attack by a snow leopard.

This way, the community has no need to retaliate against the predator, and humans and wildlife can coexist.

    I am so glad that the Snow Leopard Trust is able to work with the villages to develop a way to protect the residents and their livestock and the natural animals who live in the mountain ranges

    The herders are also turning sheep and goat wool into handicrafts and they’re now also making five times the money they made before. You can even buy the handmade handicrafts online. It’s called Snow Leopard Enterprises.

    Tasha makes 2$ a day? I’ll pay for every goat lost! We need to educate the farmers! Provide them with tools to succeed! Sponsor all of the farmers with livestock insurance! We pay for every goat lost plus 10$ so a lost animal is fully compensated for, including the time and means to go buy new livestock!

    ALL WILDLIFE NEEDS FOOD. WE ARE TAKING ALL THE LAND AND LEAVING THEIR NATURAL WILD PREY FOODS WITHOUT HABITAT. SO WHAT DO WE EXPECT.. DOMESTIC GOATS ARE FOOD. DON'T BLAME / KILL THE SNOW LEOPARDS. THEY ARE GOD'S "CHILDREN" TOO
