Alchemy was really the precursor to science. The hadn't formed the scientific method, and the process of experimenting and testing was not guided in the way it is today. But all of alchemy wasn't trying to make gold. Alchemists were trying to transform things for the better. Back in the day alchemy and chemistry were overlapping.
