How do Auto-Darkening Welding Helmets Work? Secrets of their function and their features

Published 2020-01-13
Welding helmet technology has really advanced in recent years. Helmets used to be simply metal cans with a darkened lens on it. These were very useful and protected their users. The problem with them is they have to be moved up and down off the head frequently to check work, because the user cant see out of them in between uses.
Auto Darkening helmets solve this by sensing when a user is actively welding and will darken the viewing window automatically by using LCD screen technology. These are powered by either batteries or solar panels. Most actually use a combination of both.
These helmets range in cost from about $35 to about $300. I have identified the two best welding helmets you can get. I have a budget one and a non-budget friendly one.
Budget friendly Helmet $34.55:

DEKOPRO Welding Helmet Solar Powered Auto Darkening Hood with Adjustable Shade
This helmet has all the features that you really want on a helmet but is a lot more affordable.

Best Welding Helmet $442.26:

Speedglas Welding Helmet 9100 06-0100-10SW, with ADF 9100V, 1 EA/Case
This helmet is very good and is the standard for modern welding helmets.

@2:20 I think you confused the Grind setting with the Shade setting. The Grind setting disables the autodarkening so the helmet can be used as a safety shield when grinding metal.

And now I know how they work! It always puzzled me... Thank you!

Thanks! So question....the solar panel...does it need to be stored in an area to get sun or can it be stored in a dark place but the arc from welding charges it? I never even thought about that..
  • Are the lenses on the type of helmet you have changeable? I need to change mine?

What powers the LCD viewer was confusing for some users, including me. What I've learned is that the solar cells get charged by the light from the welder flash and use that power to darken the viewing lens. But what about the time it takes to charge the solar cells ?(fraction of a second), From what I've read, the batteries get triggered by the light sensors first, to immediately darken the lens (to protect your eyes), then, when the solar cells receive enough light from the welder flash, the solar cells take over and supply the power for the viewer. Think about it, why would we need batteries, if the solar cells were supplying all of the power to darken the lens ?

Question what is best for 8hrs long daily welding without sunlight? Battery or solar?

Dude show the dials and what number to set them on...Im a biggener
  • Very informative but loud music in the background is super annoying

Nice, except how many milliseconds does the flash enter the eyes until the solid state electronics darken? Wouldn't even a quarter millisecond damage the eyes? Yes, the last time I welded something, was just stick and the "eclipse lens" 😂

Good video, but try to record your audio in a smaller room with less echo ;)
  • Just found your channel. We just started our family farm and we have videos of it. Come check it out.
