WHAT STORIES WILL THE THAMES REVEAL TODAY?! - Mudlarking the River Thames with Nicola White

Published 2020-06-14
Join me as I mudlark along the River Thames in London. This video is made up of previously unseen finds filmed before the UK lockdown and I have been having fun rediscovering this footage. You just never know what you will find along the Thames foreshore and that is certainly what keeps me coming back to it time and time again. Each find tells a story and today's finds are no exception.

I always think it is nice to link a find to a real person or a real place and so today, we take a trip to a cemetery to see if we can find someone who might have a link to a wartime find.

Thank you for watching. You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart

See you soon.
Nicola

Hi Nicola! You are right, the messages are in Romanian. There are reasons to love a close person. "Te iubesc pentru că" means "I love you because" 23:57 - You have the power to change me from bad to good 24:01 - You realize my condition through messages 24:05 - My condition depends on you 24:09 - We are the same and at the same time very different 24:12 - I offered you something important and you didn't make fun of me, but you knew how to take care of me 24:17 - If you ever happen to be late, it scares me that you won't come again 24:21 - You are the way you are and you have never changed to impress 24:25 - You are in my mind 24/24 and 7 days / 7 days As always interesting things on the banks of the Thames.

You remind me that we stand on the shoulders of every day people that made our world. Have a blessed day Mum.

The best part of your videos is information. You teach as you forage. The others like to chatter, you don't, you inform. Keep up the wonderful work. From Pat in Tennessee, stay safe as this virus again rears it's nasty head.

As an ecologist with an interest in animal bones and skulls in particular I can confirm all your identifications. Spot on!

It's an old Cub Scout badge! A fox face.

That is the head of a Wolf Cub, the junior group of the scouts. I had the same figure on my Woggle (a leather band that held my cub scout scarf together) At one time I was the youngest Cub Scout in greater London! I still remember the oath (after almost 60 years)we had to recite at each gathering. "I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to keep the law of the wolf cub pack, and to do a good turn to somebody every day " this was followed by the chant "Arkila, We'll--do--our--best!" (and a cyrptic) "Dob, Dob, Dob" :-) Tony.
  • The little notes in the bottle are so heartwarming. It’s like a group of people got together and shared heartfelt sentiments about each other then offered them to the river. They are lovely! Thanks to the person who translated them❤️

Black clay pipes are German. They undergo a second smoke when made.

I’m still in REME (24 years in Germany) and that cap badge looks like the bi-metal Kings Crown design worn only between 1947 to 1955.

Thank you for sharing. I am in a wheelchair so will never be able to go mudlarking, something I have always wanted to do. My degree of choice in the 1990s was archaeology but once again couldn't do it, I had to do history instead. Loved history but sad I couldn't get out there and dig up the bones! Respect and thanks again for sharing. 👍🏽
  • For a minute I thought the ring would say "Blessed be the Mudlarkers, for they find the lost treasures".
  • @SallyAnn191
My dad was in REME during his National Service. I gave him a cap badge for, what turned out to be, his last Christmas.
  • @keithbarnes8881
I served for 15 years in the REME, five of them in Hong Kong where I upgraded from Vehicle Mechanic to Helicopter Technician. Seeing that hat badge brought back some old memory's.

What a perfect place for a bird nest. Safe from predators. Another lovely lark by the river. Thank you Nicola.

I felt the seagull had a touch of Doc Martin about him...love love love the finds...
  • Everytime (yes, really every time!) you say in your Videos, "can you see it?", me: yeah, there it is! and you zoom in on something completely different 😂😂😂 I love it, but maybe I should get new glasses 👓

I thought that doll was the scary item! The fox face cub badge I thought was lovely. It’s interesting how different we all feel towards things. I must admit, I really don’t like the skulls. There’s something quite eerie about them. Great pipe finds again. You really are a pipe magnet. Thank you for showing the wildlife, I love to see the little feathered babies.
  • During this COVID 19 it’s nice to watch your videos and forget about our troubles. At least for a little while.
