"Maya Angelou has been an incredible mentor, mother, sister, and friend to me since my early twenties," Winfrey said in her statement following the news of Angelou's passing. "She was always there for me, guiding me through some of the most formative years of my life. Most people know her as a poet, but at her core, she was a teacher. 'When you learn, teach. When you get, give.' is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned from her.''

I don't know that Maya Angelou's origin stories were true either. She had claims of living with Billie Holiday, But Billie was the only one described as gay in the story. Claimed Billie assaulted her son. As a young person it never made sense to me. Then I began working with non-profits. And realized college educated women with affinity credentials competed over pitiful stories about their upbringing. Myself, listening and knowing not only were they lying, but the white people they told these stories to loved hearing hearing and pitying them. It didn't make them leadership material. And it reflected on others. One woman was convinced, I hope not based on all these stories, I must have been illiterate. I read at 3. My family including my great-grandmother taught me.
