What’s super annoying is paying 70 bucks for checked bags, then getting to the gate and they’re checking bags for free because there’s no overheard bin space. They’ve been doing this for years.
  • If only airlines were this strict with inspections of their airplanes
  • @onocoffee
It's the airlines that caused this problem. They started charging extra for checked baggage and everyone starting bringing everything into the cabin.
  • People are talking about checked baggage fees - what about LOST checked baggage? That's actually my biggest problem.
  • @Maya-vs7mv
There is only so much room in the overhead bin. I honestly hope that at some point, they separate the bins into 3 compartments, which would be assigned to a seat #. That way passengers will have no choice but to rethink their ridiculous amounts of carry-on stuff.

Does anyone else remember when 2 checked bags used to be free and the "temporary" baggage fee slowly became permanent?
  • @kaluca
We're being nickled and dimed by the entire economy at this point.
  • I see people wearing a backpack, carrying a tote bag, a pillow/blanket and pulling a piece of carryon luggage. Then when you are looking for space overhead all their stuff is taking up a storage bin. It IS infuriating, especially for the later groups boarding. They are going to charge the fee somehow…either by checked bags or raising the cost of flights….

If they weren’t charging so much for checked baggage we wouldn’t have these types of problems. This was never an issue before the airlines started charging for checked baggage.

Two reasons I try to avoid checking a bag is 1) a history of my checked luggage not making it to my destination at the same time as me, and 2) the ridiculous wait time at my home airport’s baggage carrousel. 30+ minute waits are not uncommon. Therefore I pack as light as I can and do carry on.

What they need to check under the microscope is building the airplanes correctly and not worry about my neck pillow.
  • I work for an airline as a gate agent. I blame the person who is scanning the boarding passes.. I’ve seen it too many time where passengers are let through the door with more than a personal item and a carry on luggage that fits in the overhead.. Airlines have to follow FAA regulations and having more than two carry items is going against it. So it’s not the passengers fault it’s strictly on the airline. Inforce the rules like you inforce those fees.

Was on a United flight today. What the airlines need to do is crack down on the size of the bag. Full size suitcases aren't carry ons.
  • I think the airlines have it backwards. They should charge the people with carry on luggage and it should be free to check your bags. People are abusing the carry on and it also delays boarding.
  • @companymen42
Does the fee include having a door that doesn’t fall off?

I just experienced this two days ago on a Southwest flight. A woman had a huge backpack, plus an enormous reusable shopping bag stuffed to overflowing (including multiple smaller bags stuffed into it). Not to mention two jackets and a big hat. The gate agent told her neither bag would be able to fit under a seat, and one bag was too big to go in the overhead bin. She suggested rearranging and checking a bag. The woman asked how much it cost to check a bag and was told “it’s free.” I don’t like checking bags for fear of them getting lost, but people are really getting ridiculous with their entitlement. The rules still apply to you. You are not special.

No one wants to pay the bag fee so they carry on. I think the personal item is out of control. It is not usual to see people with duffle bags, hiking backpacks while using a roller board.
  • @OGJtJ
It's never enough for these corporations. NEVER EVER, EVER ENOUGH.
  • @johnborges5938
Allow passengers with no carry-ons in the overhead bins to deplane first on landing. Then watch as more passengers check or simply carry less to get off sooner.
  • @seminarian97
With doors and wheels coming off of aircraft left and right and at least one Boeing employee found unalive after whistleblowing, I can totally see why my carryon bag is the industry’s biggest concern. Gimme a break
