What they did to Bumi actually pissed me off

Making kyoshi the main avatar in the live action instead of roku was really outraegous Roku being the main avatar guide to aang made the main conflict so much more engaging because he himself was part of the fire nation and had ties to the royal family , and his actions led to the 100 years War in the first place So his past mistakes served as wisdom for him to guide aang through the right path to fix his mistakes and end the War But with kyoshi , the "perfect" avatar , having more screentime and influence over aang , the avatar as a character feels so much more detached from the fire nation conflict , i love kyoshi but she had no business having this much influence on aang when roku , his direct predecessor was right there

Katara suddenly became a water bending master in 5 minutes is stupid.
  • Book one is literally called Water...and he didn't learn any water bending in it. Saying it was weird to do that is an understatement.

Katara was straight up character assassinated. She went from being assertive, opinionated, and fiery to this bland, passive, going along for the ride character. She seems to have no interest in anything that’s happening. She barely stands up for herself or the injustices around her. Not nearly as much as the original did. Edit: to be clear none of this is hate towards the actress. I think she did a fine job with the writing and direction she was given. It was just really bad writing and direction.

I'd say one fault you haven't really touched on is the fact the trio doesn't feel like a group of friends, like in the animated series with much of the goofiness missing

The writers of the adaptation don't want their "good" characters to have any flaws. They actively removed all flaws from all members of team Avatar. Aang is no longer immature, or responsable from running away. He also never had to lie to his friends because he was afraid to lose them like in the episode "Bato of the watertribe". Katara is no longer bossy, or jealous of Aang learning faster than her. She didn't have to steal the scroll or didn't have to shut her mouth and swallow her pride to have Pakku teach waterbending to Aang. Sokka is no longer immature, sexist, insecure of himself and a bad fighter. Zuko does no longer have any anger issues to overcome, and doesn't have "the ends justify the means" mentality he has in the animated show.
  • When Zuko reacted to his portrayal in the Ember Island players episode he said “They made my character look stiff and humorless.” In the Netflix remake it seems they made everyone look stiff and humorless.

Idk but removing the story of katara’s necklace really ticked me. Like that necklace is what made Pakku realize that the Northern tribe’s sexist views on men and women are outdated. It also cost him a wife. Instead he is like “oh my students love katara fine I will budge”.
  • Finally! Someone who agrees that Ozai is not meant to be humanized or sympathetic. Someone with some sense and understanding of his character.

Wouldnt be surprized if Toph isnt blind and leaves her home with her parents blessing (edit to say thanks for the 1K likes, it's never happened before! Thank you!)

Bumi is white lotus member, so he should be a wiseman and teach avatar some values

It pisses me off that the one major thing we get to see of Hakoda is him being critical of Sokka. Sure it's just a small memory of him talking to someone in private, but when it's the one major thing we are shown we're naturally led to believe this is his true idea of his son. One of my favorite things about Hakoda is how he stands in stark contrast to Ozai as a father. Zuko has to beg to be let into a war meeting, and speaking out of turn in it gets him burned and banished with a task thought to be impossible just so Ozai can get him off his hair. When Sokka appears unexpectedly at the water tribe camp, people welcome him and notice how much he's grown, they lead him to his father's war meeting, and Hakoda himself stops EVERYTHING to stand up and embrace his son. Even when Sokka was a small kid Hakoda trusted him and told him what a man should be, entrusting him with protecting his tribe while also understanding he's just a child and should not be burdened more than he already is, and now that he's grown and experienced the world Hakoda sees him as the brave and capable warrior he has become, treating him like the rest of his men. He never saw his son as a failure or a disappointment, even in passing or as a joke. He knew his children both had strong spirits and incredible potential that he had to protect by keeping the fire nation away from their shores.

Love tunnel is only included because people like the SECRET TUNELLLLLLL
  • @Juggtacula
Bumi being angry at Aang is even more stupid when you realize that THIS version of Aang didn't even run away like in the cartoon. He legit just got caught in a storm while he was trying to come to terms with his responsibility and couldn't get back. Which also takes away from Aang's character.
  • @FelipeBorgesJF
It felt really weird that they left out a bunch of things from book 1 and at the same time adapted stuff from book 2. Like... 8 episodes is not enough even for book 1 and they bring more stuff anyway
  • @britt5650
Like you said there is no consitancy with the skill levels of benders. Zuko was able to get the upper hand on Ozai and only lost because he hesitated, then Katara is somehow able to best Zuko by the end of the season despite never waterbending before aang. The show made a lot more sense where Zuko was a major threat because of his age and skill and Katara learned waterbending gradually over time. Aang not waterbending once makes no sense.
  • The “they see with their emotions” bit angers me specially because it carries huge implications for Toph and her character, since she learned to see from those things!
  • When they revealed Aang being in the iceberg was not because of him having a human moment of being afraid and overwhelmed by all his responsibilities by running away but because he left to clear his head, I was already done with the show. If you can’t this crucial part of Aang’s development correct, what can you get right? And spoiler alert: the answer was not much. Albert and his writers do not want their characters to have character flaws.
  • I HATE what they did to Bumi. Originally Bumi was a wise king giving good advice to a 12 year old child. Now it feels like Bumi was raging about the unfairness of the world when it comes to responsibilities and tough decisions. While the CHILD is now wise and mature in his naivety for refusing to accept that advice. Just completely unrealistic and divergent from the original
