Final Fantasy Tactics How To Unlock Dark Knight
How do you unlock the Dark Knight class in Final Fantasy Tactics?
Dark Knight requires mastered Knight, mastered Black Mage, level 8 Dragoon, level 8 Geomancer, level 8 Ninja, level 8 Samurai and 20 kills to unlock.

I made this quick video to discuss a few basic issues when it comes to unlocking Dark Knight.
More info on The Lion War Mod and how to install it.

1. First you need clean ISO of the Final Fantasy Tactics (USA) release for PSX. The file can come in .bin format.

2. Download the mod from this page: ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=12767.0

3. Follow the instructions here on how to patch your ISO: ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=9379.0

Choose your favorite PSX emulator and have fun!

If you plan on playing on PC the recommended ones are Duckstation or pSX. Duckstation or Retroarch if planning to play on mobile. The game also works on modded PlayStation Classic and real PSX hardware.

Thank you! I've never been able to unlock this class, now I know why, I didn't realize about the 20+ kills. Love your content! Especially if it's a video on different builds.
  • Think you will do more short how to and tutorials in the future? I also like the Ogre Battle reference you have there.
  • The requirements to unlock Dark Knight are lame. The Lion War Mod does it better. Thanks for making such simple yet well done video with visual examples!
  • Great video, and a quick tip to anyone and everyone trying to unlock this job efficiently: Let Ramza or Luso unlock it first. Both Ramza and Luso have both Tailwind and Shout, which boosts their Speed by 1. Have their Support ability be Gain JP Up (Squire) and let Ramza/Luso go hunker down in a safe corner of the map, Tailwinding over and over to 50 speed. After that, if he still needs more JP to get to level 8 of the class, or to master it (like Black Mage), use Focus until you max your attack damage. This is quite easy to achieve if you have at least 1 Orator in your party that can scare an enemy into a chicken by lowering their Bravery count to 0, and optionally another unit that can cast Sleep on them. Might as well equip everyone else besides Ramza with Steal and repeatedly Steal Gil from the surrounded chicken enemy while Ramza levels himself. Note: Other units will also get spill over JP! This will significantly shorten their grinds. Generic units are the second easiest to unlock the class. For generics, plan ahead and run errands in the Pub. Generics are the next easiest simply because of the fact that they can gain quite a lot of JP from the errands. Finally, for special units and generics that need more JP, I highly suggest Steal Gil + chickening the last enemy. Get into a random battle and possibly take only 4 units, kill off all enemies except for 1 that will become a chicken. 4 units can surround the chicken, if you bring a 5th unit they will sort of just stand there, I guess they can be Ramza to just get spill over. The 4 thieves just keep stealing gil (which also is good for buying stuff) and apply another debuff to Bravery if the enemy chicken gets to 8-9 Bravery over that many turns. Another annoying thing is the 20+ kills. There is no way to track how many kills that a unit has caused. If you have all the job prerequisites but it doesn't unlock, the only tip I can give is equip that unit with some solid gear, make them something that can solo like a Ninja with Martial Arts, kill off all enemies except one and just keep kiting the last enemy around the map without attacking while the dead enemies turn into crystals or treasure chests. From 0 to 20 kills is (roughly) 5 enemies per random battle, but only 4 will become crystals, so its 5 random battles to get 20 kills. I played War of the Lions recently on my iPhone, I have 5 Dark Knights (Ramza, Agrias, Cloud and a generic male and female). You absolutely do not need even 1 to beat the game, let alone 5. Just getting one is more than enough, if you have 5, no joke - you're essentially invincible. One final tip for all you crazies out there that want a Dark Knight in chapter 1: Maybe wait until you get to the desert map as there is a trap that delevels characters. Getting a Dark Knight without delevelling will probably put your units at like level 50ish...better to keep them around level 10 for chapter 1 so you can still play the game semi-normally.

When I played through the war of the lions because of the high requirements for dark knight the only character I made into a dark knight was Ramza

On classes like Mage where the abilities are long then the screen and have different prices, if you keep your jp low and then start the process of buying a cheap ability, when you are at the confirmation dialogue instead of clicking yes or no, hold the square button and press down, if you land on an ability that you can't currently afford and then select yes you should see you JP go to 0. If this happens exit out and then go back in and that class will now have 9999 JPs. and you can then buy all the abilities. This is so damn handy for late game if you don't want to spend days grinding out your spare characters to get their abilities.

There is a hack to give Ramza Gafgarions abilities on the original Playstation 1 version. I know because I watched my Uncle do it. You have to level up some certain classes to a certain level and you also have to strip him of his gear before he leaves, and have ramza wearing it as I think a Squire. And then you have to let him hit you with the one attack a few times. And then you kill him and it doesn't always happen but there is a change when you collect his crystal it will give you his abilities. I forget exactly how to do it. But it is possible.

Does the 20 kills need to be solo kill with no other characters doing damage on the specific enemy?
  • @adrianchew6260
Final fantasy tactic very good game, hope they remake this game so not only Dark Knight still can change job to Rune Knight, Shrine Knight, High Templar Knight, Holy Knight and Oblivion Knight.
  • @ConnahJay
Is there a way to play the mod on my OG PSX hardware and OG game CD? How would I pull something like that off?
  • Quick question. It's not 20 kills per job, just 20 kills overall for that character right?
  • so just making sure, if playing the 2.5 war of the lions mod... requirements are still the same ?
  • @0orazielo0
In this mod you still able to steal the Genji Set from Elmdor?
