Discovering The Railroaders Memorial Museum with Five Grandkids

Published 2024-03-20
The Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, PA is a must see for all rail fans. Join us as we explore all there is to see at the Railroaders Museum with our five grandkids in tow.

The Museum complex is housed on three floors in the old Master Mechanic's Building on 9th Avenue and 12th Street in Altoona. It accessible from I-99 at 17th Street.

In the museum you'll find three floors of exhibits that transport visitors back to the hey-day of the railroad including the juicy story abut Hitler targeting Altoona during WWII. Outside, the museum shows off their rolling stock and features a roundhouse, turntable and multiple engines, cars and cabooses from the PRR.

This museum is great for kids. Many of the displays are meant to be touched and can be turned on by pushing a button or simply by walking into the room. Our kids loved the HO gauge model train display that is made to look like Altoona in the early 1900's.

There is a lot to take in here. Train buffs will be thrilled to learn about the K-4 Steam Locomotive, the test lab and the plot to blow up the horseshoe curve by the Nazi's in WWII.

The railroaders memorial museum is a cheap and fun way to spend an afternoon. Kids three and under get in free.

  • I’m very happy to let you know the REAL K4 1361 steam locomotive is being restored to operation inside the roundhouse. So in the future, it will be a working steam locomotive again. Not only will it operate at the museum, it will travel across Pennsylvania for tours and excursions for the public. It’s a very exciting project.
