Greetings you loyal, you curious Herle Burly-ites!

We’ve got a “MP Alert” on the pod today!

The Honourable Marco Mendicino has graciously made some time for us.

Marco is the long serving – since 2015 – Member of Parliament from Eglinton/Lawrence in Toronto.
He’s served in Cabinet as both the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship … and more recently, Minister of Public Safety. Before public life, he was a federal prosecutor for more than a decade.

And it’s both his personal experiences and his political experience in the latter cabinet portfolio – Public Safety – that’s going to inform the discussion we’re having today.

In the wake of last weekend’s Trump assassination attempt, I want to explore this visceral and growing issue of political violence. As well as dive into the broader issues of national security and public safety.

What’s fueling the vitriol and behaviour?
How do we mitigate it?
What’s the government’s role and what’s the public’s role?

As I said, Marco has first-hand experience with all of it. So, who better to talk about it?

Addressing political violence with the guy who keeps asking to fight Pierre, outside of the House of Commons is hilarious.
  • From what I recall during the Convoy, Marco incited conflict through his words. Subsequently, he claimed to have no knowledge of the Bernardo transfer that occurred without the victims' families being informed. I was surprised that he was a guest on your show, but you're a balanced guy, David. I'm just not a fan of Mendicino's. Nothing he says or does will convince me otherwise. He's more concerned with the safety of politicians than with Canadian citizens. Blaming behaviour on mental health issues invalidates legitimate anger towards those in power. Politicians need to behave properly. I'm finished with the Liberals. I'm all for Poilievre. I can't listen to this anymore.
  • One of the poorer interviews that DH has conducted - MM was evasive & unwilling to be specific & somehow the Liberal disinformation about firearms never came up! MM has been part of a government that has been divisive & incompetent at the same time! But you know - I am from the “regions” - hold unacceptable views and should not be tolerated according to our eco-warrior PM!
  • Fitting you have "lying" Marco on to discuss about political violence. Maybe he should have been a little more transparent to the public. Hey Marco, every find any weapons in those trucks in Ottawa yet?

Mendicino's comments should be viewed in historical context. The gov't is using legislation to legitimize political violence against citizens. “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” ― Tacitus, The Annals of Imperial Rome
  • Mr Mendicino never fails to impress despite his vaguely articulated suspicions. In fact.."mixing the surreal with the real"; death threats are as common as houses and any suspected increases in their number are easily accounted for. But "addressing political violence with M.M." proved too difficult a task for this thought provoking duo; although the provocative pollster is less the buffoon in company with Marco. That is not intended as an insult but merely an observation as the timer ends @ 10 minutes of 60. An insult would be borrowing a comment portraying Mr Mendicino as "the definition of mealy mouthed." And that is part of the sordid behaviours of MPs in House and Committee including this ex-Minister terminated by yet another political tragedy..who..did the right thing. Perhaps what is most disturbing about the raw ignorance of many political members is their shared lack of awareness in virtually every moment. Maybe Morneau, Philpott, Garneau and even Puglaas were seen as plausible threats to Cabinet solidarity despite their adhesion to lawful process and Canadiana.

Marco is a known liar in his time in Parliament, so having him talk about "misinformation" is beyond comical.
  • @oldtimer7979
Trudeau's failing is that he can't reconcile his radical, transformative vision and purpose for Canada's and Canadians future with "its the economy, stupid".
  • @girthbrooks6567
I usually enjoy listening to your guest’s perspectives but respectfully, Marco ain’t it chief
  • @kenhouse8857
This is easily the worst podcast in this series. The man literally lied to the house if commons to inact the emergency act. Stripped away citizens rights, seized bank accounts all based on lies. He's a POS
  • @Tomyum19
It is a devastating shame that Marco spearheaded the effort to strip Canadians of their property rights because after listening to this he seems to be one of the most level headed and down to Earth Liberals who could have easily done good work as a Conservative. After the gun ban mess though that will never happen. Too bad, he seems like a great guy otherwise. I'd be interested to know how he feels about guns off the record.
  • @annebell2816
Thanks Mr. Medicino for bringing this serious matter of safety of our politicians to our attention. Great podcast
  • @garryr002
Amazed at the yeahbut crowd trying to justify their "right" to respond outside of societal norms. I believe, with few exceptions, that politicians are there to try to make our society better.
  • Hour well spent. The thoughtfulness of Marco as an MP, as demonstrated in this discussion, is an antidote to Mendisino the minister.
