Published 2024-06-09
First year of Karate classes, and our first Karate Tournament and a very interesting experience. AKR Tournament, Houston, TX, June 2024.
We all got to compete according to our age and level and came home with medals. But it was not easy for the kids!

That was totally awesome. ! Congratulations !!!
  • It definitely should go by weight and not age. Some of the kids looked bigger than me

I agree at first the weight were so far apart. I am glad they separated that age group. The girls did great! I am glad you went, Anne! I hope y'all continue with this.
  • Firstly, I must express that I found your video quite upsetting. As the mother of the child you referred to as "big and scary," whose name is Emily, I want to clarify that she is only 11 years old and new to karate, having trained for just three months. She recently progressed from a white to a yellow belt and has worked diligently for this tournament. The helmet she wore was suggested for her safety, and we followed that recommendation. Labeling her as big for an adult and calling a child "scary" on video is inappropriate and hurtful. As her mother, I am deeply offended by these comments. It’s unjust to critique her physical appearance and stature. This portrayal is not only unfair but also unkind. Furthermore, I understand that participants can be as advanced as green belts. Additionally, it’s worth noting that many competitors, smaller than your daughter, have won against larger opponents, demonstrating that size does not determine capability in this sport. Something you should know about Emily: she is the sweetest, kindest, most generous person I know. When she accidentally hurt your daughter during the match, she immediately tended to her and showed genuine concern. Emily is always the first to defend anyone, and those who truly know her can attest to her beautiful, kind-hearted nature. Calling her "big and scary" is far from the truth and quite shameful.
