This video illustrates what happens when a shotgun shell accidentally goes off outside a gun. It is surprisingly innocuous.
This was done under very controlled conditions - do not reproduce this yourself.

Be sure to watch what happens with a .50 BMG is set off under the same conditions.    • .50 BMG Shell exploding OUTSIDE a gun...

We will be demonstrating the Fith Ops trip alarm more in another video but check out this site. They have a lot of cool specialty shotgun ammo too! It was nice of them to send us this to test out!

I had a house fire, and had several thousand rounds of various caliber explode in the fire. I told the firemen before they went in the house, but they weren't concerned at all. Unconstrained shells exploding like this just dont concentrate the energy in one direction just as this video shows, and against their fire protection, there was no increased danger from the shells. I had never thought about it before - Good to see this video to see it firsthand and slowed down!
  • How loud is this? I was going to do something kinda like this and I'm wondering if I can get away with it in my backyard.
  • @koustubh
Thanks for the warning! I was gonna explode all the shotgun shells lying around in my house

"Warning: Do not try this in your home". Duh, everybody knows you should go out in the back yard...

Thank you everyone for RATING then video! And thanks to everyone who has added non-English captions! You are the best! There is a FOLLOW UP video where we shot a SLUG and BUCKSHOT at the end of the video!!!!

So this is the one of few videos we see Jeff the camera man in, it's good to see ya man, thank you all for continuing our education in meny different ways. Keep up the good work. My thoughts for a future video is being this thing back but wrap the cartridge with black electrical tape, I think that'll be interesting.

Great video in the MythBusters tradition. One hint, spray your crash-test-dummy (I never did catch his name) with white paint before each test. That way you can quantify the damage from this particular test.

I would imagine those devices are more for making some noise to scare off an intruder in your home or to wake you up/scare of an animal at a campsite if you set it up with a tripwire, as opposed to actually hurting someone
  • @GoingBallistic
What if it went off in your hand? We are going to simulate that at the end of this week. Thanks for what you guys do. Love the channel
  • Surprisingly I've never seen this done on camera before. Very cool slow motion on this one. I used to use shotgun shells as exploding targets for my airgun/.22

i think these trip alarms are more or less just to alert the occupants with the sound of a shotgun shell, and also to scare anyone trying to bust into your home. Hearing a shotgun shell go off next to your leg would be real scary. Great video

We used the 12 gauge boat flares in ours. Angle them up and they'll still go a good distance. My friend also reloaded a few shells using Pyrotex black powder. Put them in a 2 inch piece of PVC and dude, loud is an understatement.

Something to consider: If you can get it to discharge with electricity, NO Holder, the weight of the shot exceeds the hull and the hull will launch backwards rather quickly, and that MAY be more efficacious.

ADT is for when you're away and ACP is for when you're home.

Really cool to see this in slow motion! Liked as always! :D

This actually seems like a perfect system to scare away critters or potential assholes trying to break in.
