I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention anything about how yandere completely destroyed and change the eyes. my speculation is that yandere does much better with black and white which seems to align with what you said. I'd be interested to see if making them monochromatic would turn better results than using an AI to color them.

Waifu2x is particularily good for stylized texture art to upscale from games like Warcraft III, which has simple style flatcolours and details that parrallel anime style art in some way, hence quite decent results, annd faults of the upscaling are its strengths there.

"Imagine if Animes were 50MB files and used upscaling." Honestly yeah that's a good point. TV Shows, Movies, and Other forms of digital media are starting balloon in size tbh, upscaling could be an avenue to keep the size down.
