Joe & Mac (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Published 2021-11-19
A playthrough of Takara's 1993 action-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Joe & Mac.

This video shows two different runs through the game in order to show all of the stages. The first shows the A-paths taken, while the second, beginning at 16:32, shows the B-path stages. Finally, since the game has three different endings, I show the last one at 32:45.

Data East's 1991 arcade game Caveman Ninja (   • Caveman Ninja (Wii) Playthrough - Nin...   ) appeared on most of the popular early 90s gaming machines, though these conversions differed quite a bit from one another. The SNES game (   • Joe & Mac (SNES) Playthrough - Ninten...   ) was a sort of remix of the original, while the Genesis version was more of a direct conversion of the arcade original. (As far as I'm concerned, the less said about the NES and Game Boy games, the better.)

The stage layouts directly mirror those of the coin-op, the controls feel pretty much the same between them, and it retains the weapon charge mechanic that was cut from the Super Nintendo game. It also retains much of the original game's challenge - this one requires a fair bit of practice and memorization to get through. The last boss is particularly brutal.

The graphics lack the color of the arcade and SNES games, but they remain quite faithful to their source material. The bosses are huge, and there are lot of cool little animation flourishes throughout, like how the cavemen burst out of bushes to surprise you, or how they run in fear if they miss their attack. The tropical music all sounds great playing through the Genesis's FM synth, too.

While I overall prefer the SNES game, Joe & Mac on the Genesis is an excellent conversion of the fondly remembered arcade game, and it's one that any platformer fan will likely enjoy quite a bit.

  • It's all fun and games until someone gets ravaged and savaged by that grotty chick.
  • A nice port of the Arcade original. As far as the music goes, you can't deny that signature Matt Furniss composition. The Super NES version was done by Data East themselves while the NES version was done by Elite.
  • Seeing that mammoth boss fall apart is quite the nightmare fuel tbh.

I remember playing bootleg version of this, in which we play as the Mario. Yes! You heard that right. I don't remember name of that particular game, but it was SO BAD lol.
  • I like how this version is the only one to feature Joe going Bad Dudes on the winpose
  • @zsiles
    A very good arcade port.

This version is closer to the Arcade game, so I'd say this is the second best one. Second to the original Arcade game. Also, you actually see the women get kidnapped in this version, just like in the Arcade.

Oh wow, wasn't aware this version even existed.

Wow looks like a SNES game, never heard of joe & Mac on sega.
  • @sammyshehole
I prefer this version overall but the SNES version has a better and more epic final boss.
  • Lmao.. struggling to drag the fat girl is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a video game
  • Looks like the SNES was censored, I see a few difference just on the 1st level.

For some reason, I remember your character having a depleting life bar, like Hudson's Adventure Island and Wonder Boy. Maybe it was the arcade version which did that, I don't know. Also, is that fossilized Robocop in the options menu?

This is great. Would love to have narration over the video to know your thought process or even giving us tips and tricks to beating this game ourselves. :) keep them coming. You got a sub from me :)

In the last couple days I noticed that YT started to hide the dislike counter in all videos, even the ones with years of publication. Can you opt to show the dislikes, or is that not a option anymore?
