Libby Rich had an illegal abortion in Alabama when she was 19 years old. Rich spoke with reporter Abbey Crain about her experience and the repercussions her illegal abortion had on her life.

On May 15, 2019, Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a bill that makes it a crime to perform an abortion.

The “Human Life Protection Act,” or HB314 would make performing an abortion a Class A felony, punishable by 20 to 99 years in prison.

HB314 does not include any exceptions for instances of rape or incest.

if you’re against abortion, it’s ok. don’t get one. don’t abort. but don’t try to take that choice away from another woman. we need to be more empathetic and understand that it’s ONLY HER CHOICE to have a baby or not. it doesn’t affect ANYONE but her. can’t believe they’re taking away rights from us. the right to make decisions over our OWN BODIES. it’s not fair
  • Having a medical and legal system fail people is disappointing. My heart aches for this woman.

So I would have vasectomy’s mandatory for 12 year old boys no excuse’s. Then after they graduate from college or learn a trade and they are not in college debt and are living in a residence are able to pay for it, along with their car payment and insurance, utilities, credit card payments then if they are in a relationship it better be healthy and then discuss about having a child if ready reverse the vasectomy.

I don’t think abortion should be illegal, for these sorts of reasons. No one should be shamed and definitely not arrested for having an abortion… but morally, I feel that woman lose the right to bear a child if they willingly destroy one in their body. And I mean willingly… not a woman who has been pushed into abortion when they don’t want one - like many are. There should be severe penalties for those who force an abortion on a woman. This won’t be a popular opinion, but abortion should never be done lightly
  • Libby had backstreet abortion keep her friends and family from finding out she was pregnant

When all is still and quiet....thoughts of regret and what great potential that life would have become.

Can I just say if you are pro life it doesn't make you a superior human being than those of us who are pro choice. People make decisions for different reasons and they face the due consequences alone... your input and negative judgement really doesn't medicate the situation. Stop shaming, and emotionally degrading women who have gone through this especially if it's something you don't agree with.

The Human Life Protection Act Sounds Good But...

I am cc urious and also a little disgusted that you have so heavily edited this woman's account. Like about the bit where she told you about seeing her formed child in the toilet bowl. She is broken and remorseful about her lost opportunity to have other children and needs to have a cause to justify her decision. In hindsight adopting her baby would have broken her less.

The sympathy should be for that poor child that innocently lost he or she’s life.
