Sgt. Bill Foulk was an Army Ranger at Fort Lewis, Washington, when he purchased a cheap house in a rough Tacoma neighborhood as an investment in 1989.

Foulk grew concerned that a house on Ash Street, his block, was infested with gang activity. He purchased his own house for $10,000 ($20,875 in 2019 dollars), with the idea that property values would rise.

He began to videotape the people who visited the suspected drug house. He wasn't wrong. The occupants were members of the Crips, the violent street gang that was spreading from California to Washington in search of new markets for drugs.

Foulk told The Associated Press that gang members began to threaten him when they noticed he was filming their movements. When he feared that the gang was about to take action against him, he called friends from the 2nd Ranger Battalion to his house to have a "BBQ" and be present in case the house was attacked.

Just after the Rangers arrived on Sept. 23, 1989, some 15 to 20 gang members began to shoot up the 32-year-old's house while his buddies were inside. Luckily, the Rangers had brought their own personal weapons to the BBQ. The Crips were surprised when their would-be victim's house began to return fire and ran for their lives.

The most incredible part of this story is being able to buy a home for $20k

Imagine you and your gang buddies going to somebody’s house then being shot at by a whole military squad

"...against all enemies, foreign and domestic."
  • @nunbiz7328
Its nuts how the cops won't police an area sufficiently then lecture people for organizing a defense against people trying to kill them.
  • The most unbelievable part of this story is the fact the guy left his house unoccupied for an entire deployment and it never got robbed.
  • @Shoelaces77
They’d probably smoke the entire gang too if they were given the green light
  • @tlorsta
Never disrespect anyone who was willing to lay down their lives to protect the very country that you're living in. 💯
  • @slavvings
The chief is upset about him not calling the police, I'd bet the Ranger was more upset the times he did call and they did nothing.
  • @machninety7334
Having 15 ranger buddies show up really tells you how close these guys are. That’s a very tight knit group and I bet if he ever needed to call them again they would all still be ready for that call. I wish I had friends like that.

All the hilltop homes are like $1 million now..
  • @Paul_Hanson
If that had happened today instead of 35 years ago, the District Attorney would have brought Foulk and his ranger buddies up on charges and turned the Crips loose.

Police: "sorry we can't do anything..." Also Police: "why didn't you call us?! Defending yourselves was a reckless move and could have got people hurt!"

This story reminds me of how bullying is handled at public schools. The victim reaches out to teachers, only to be ignored. As soon as the victim has had enough and fights back, they get chastised and told they should have reported it to the school faculty. Both kids are suspended, but the bully who doesn't give a shit about school anyways, sees it as a free vacation.

People who think they are dangerous vs people who are actually dangerous
  • @Nate_the_Nobody
At least the military had their back "I dunno guys, seems like clear cut self defense to us, people fucked around, they found out"
  • @snake2314
Just imagine being one of those gang members who escaped just to open the paper and find out they just tried to attack some of the most skilled and trained soldiers in America 💀
  • @corrupt1user
"He was never promoted" He proactively organized a defensive fortification, established and adhered to rules of engagement, and led a team through a battle. The dude has officer material written all over his body.
