Why is my cat always staring at the shelf.

My cat Mittens who is 14 yrs old now. I have noticed through some time now that he will sit and stare and meow in the same spot every day. And I'm not sure if it's because he knows that his older brother cat Simbas ashes are on the second shelf down. Sadly our cat Simba had passed away from an over active thyroid, he was on medicine for about two yrs to help control it. But on the morning of October 18th 2016, I had found my cat Simba gone. And he had an appointment that day for a check up. And I remember the night before his passing he had been laying down on the bathroom floor. As I was patting him and telling him it's ok, we're bringing you to your appointment. You all know what it's like to have a fur baby and how we talk to them. And I believe they understand us as we understand them. So I stayed up with him until about 4:30 am and that's actually when I said we're bringing him to the drs that afternoon. So he held on for as long as he could because I was there or at least I believe he was. So I had gone to bed and I remember Mittens was waking me up later in the morning. As I jumped out of the bed calling for Simba and he wasn't in the bathroom anymore. I got very nervous because he wasn't coming out anywhere. So I looked everywhere but the last place and I remember dreading to look in his hiding place. The cabinet under the sink, and that's where I found him but he was gone already. And I remember feeling the hurt in the pit of my stomach. So he used every little ounce of energy that he had left to get up from the bathroom floor to walk to the kitchen and had pulled the cabinet door open to under the sink. That was his favorite hiding spot for his whole life.
