Lynnwood police said the incident began around 6:04 p.m., with an altercation between two groups of people. During the altercation, one teenage boy pulled out a gun and fired at the other group. However, the bullet hit an uninvolved 13-year-old girl who was not connected to either group.

Police identified the victim as Jayda Woods-Johnson.

The shooter, a 16-year-old boy from Edmonds, was brought into a police station later in the evening by his mother. He's in custody and will be booked into jail for murder.

A teenage girl hanging out at the mall with friends during summer break isn’t “wrong place, wrong time.” We just live in a society where we have to risk our lives to go to school, hang out at the mall with friends, go watch a movie, go to the store, go to church!! Sad times

His mom did the right thing dragging him to cops to confess. Our kids can't go to the food court at the freaking mall? Unbelievable. R.I.P. Sweetheart😢
  • This is one of the biggest reasons why shopping malls and movie theaters are slowly dying. It’s much harder to get killed just staying at home shopping on Amazon and streaming movies on your big flat screen TV.

Innocent girl taken by little monsters whose parents failed to raise them.
  • My daughter, 17 at the time, & I were in a similar situation while shopping for her Senior Prom dress. She was leaving right after graduation for Army Basic Training. She is less than a yr now, from full military retirement. 2 gangs decided to shoot it out in the food court, directly across from the store we were shopping at. It was the store clerk's first day, & she immediately directed everyone to the back room as bullets were hitting the glass around the huge open front door, & in thru the racks of clothes. We crawled along the floor from the front to the back, & helped other customers do the same. Some were just frozen in fear, & the 2 other store clerks followed the new girls directions, & we all got into the back room. We could hear the voices of the 2 gangs screaming at each other, then more shots fired. Some of them were actually in the store. We kept everyone quiet, & soon it got quiet outside, but for 1 male voice screaming "I'm shot! I'm shot!" He was 1 of the gang nembers. We finally got a knock on the door saying It's the police. Open up! We made him prove it!!!!! They took all of our statements, & my daughter & I gave descriptions, as we were right at the front of the store, feet from the food court, when it started. We originally thought someone dropped a tray of food, so looked to see who did. We were pretty shook, didn't get a prom dress, but were grateful the only person shot was 1 of the gang. It did turn out a young teen turned up later at a hospital who had also been shot. Both survived. The mall did everything they could to minimize the situation, although yheir security is a joke! Within days, I wrote the the Store Manager, the Regional Manager, & the Corporate Office to commend a young lady, on her 1st day of work, with great instincts & leadership, who saved lives that day! We're all so quick to write bad reviews & condemn, but I thought she needed to be recognized! Later my daughter & I were fliwn to NYC, where the young lady received a Hero Award from the Corporate Office, & a new job offer there! ❤❤❤ PS, I don't go to Malls anymore, & rarely to any crowded event, but last year went to the KC Chiefs Super Bowl Parade. We had a shooting there, multiple victims, many of them children, & 1 fatality. I doubt I will EVER go out into a crowd again!
  • Something must be done about the crime wave perpetrated by these “Dutch tourists” who are prone to violence and have no impulse control.

What the hell is this “wrong place wrong time” BS? The victim is a member of the public who is at a public facility where people go to eat and shop. Surely you can do better reporting than this.

An altercation between 2 groups in a foot court and they hit an innocent person. That says it all.
  • @beths999
What’s so frightening is the age of these kids!! Breakdown of family!
  • Why do they say two groups ? Call it what it is, two gangs. When will law enforcement get rid of the gangs? My condolences to the young lady's family and friends. She was NOT in the wrong place at the wrong time. Those gangs were. They should have been in prison.

Lack of a Nuclear family is the problem. Half of America is divorced or a single parent.
  • @Quipson
Those people fight over mall food, too.

There's a reason why stereotypes exist.
