You should be building more of the regular towers. The green area they produce is your energy production

I've always found it easiest to bring the entire map to one height as much as possible, preferably somewhere in height 18-20, then grid up the towers at maximum range from each other, have a cannon right between each of them. The cannons' range ensures that any egg or spore that lands gets taken care of before it can do any significant damage.
