How I Built a Stunning Crokinole Board from Scratch

Published 2024-01-19
Discover how I transformed a stunning piece of bacon padauk wood into a playable piece of art: a crokinole board game! I saw a few pictures of a game called Crokinole online, and thought it was just beautiful, so I decided to research it a bit and build my own. I like to use projects like this as "practice" and just to see if I can actually do it - but this one turned out to have a few surprises, but paid off BIG in the fun category.

Great nostalgia there, thanks, as a Canuck living in Europe. Why have I been thinking of crokinole lately? Game memories with Gramma and fam... I always pick projects way beyond my woodworking ability lol.

Great job on the board! Looks absolutely stunning! If you're willing to put more coats of poly, you could sand it to a proper mirror finish and make it look even more amazing than what you did an fantastic job. When I make my boards, I sand the surface to 400 dry sand (as flat as possible), then coat with about 8 coats of water based poly. I sand in between to get the surface as level as possible without any dips in the board. Once it's flush as can be, wet sand at 600, 1000, 1500, and a final 2000. When that's complete, give a regular McGuiar's wax and quick polish. For durability and quality of surface, the extra elbow grease really makes that surface shine and while making the discs fly. To even add proper frictionless motion to the discs, you can rub each side with a bit of mcquiar's wax.

My biggest hesitation for buying a crokinole board is finding a place to store it! I feel like you'd need to dedicate a spot on the wall to hang it, or maybe set up a little hammock for it under the kitchen table. This turned out pretty nice! The brads following the grain makes perfect sense in hindsight, but I certainly wouldn't have predicted it :D

"It made sense at the time." is going to be on my tombstone. You mentioned 6 coats of a finish but I dont notice what type of finish other than the wax.
