I lived over 20 years in Chattanooga TN before moving back home to Northeast TN. I couldn't be happier. Here are a few of the reasons I'm glad that I left Chattanooga after having some time to reflect. Some reasons are apparent, some are not. I hope this helps you!

No offense to my friends in Chattanooga. The town has a lot going for it; but it has some drawbacks depending on what you're looking for.

Chattanooga used to be an affordable and great town, then the word got out. Over the past few years, a mass of upper-income people have moved here who vote differently than the general native population. This has caused a rapid and large increase in the cost of living here, has increased general and violent crime as well as it's footprint. The native population is now having issues surviving, and some of us are being forced to move further away from the suburbs in search of more affordable living expenses. One piece of advice: If you park your car anywhere in downtown, make sure there is nothing of value in plain sight through the windows or your car will be broken into in broad daylight. House prices have doubled, and rent has more than doubled. In order to move here and be comfortable in a two bedroom one bath, the household income should be no less than $200,000. In order to just survive that number can be as low as $80,000, however you will have no discretionary spending. You will only pay your bills and eat. I do not have a positive outlook on the future direction of this town. This outlook pains me as I am a lifelong resident and love this town.

I think it's a benefit to everyone involved when people move to places that they would feel comfortable and happy to be in the community, so thanks for the honest perspective it really helps a lot of people!

Stellar presentation; thorough, detailed and balances 👍🏾💯
  • Great info/video...I was leaning towards Jasper Highlands but will look into NE TN thanks to your insight.
  • Chattanooga is my hometown. It has its faults but its a nice area especially if you like hiking, rafting, etc. I live just right outside of the Chattanooga area in Birchwood,TN
  • We already have a realtor, but I just have to thank you for all your videos. They’ve been such a blessing to me as we navigate our upcoming move from Florida to NE Tennessee. Thank you for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge and your obvious love for your area. So excited to be there soon!
  • Thank you so much for posting such a well-done, informative video. I am currently looking at potential retirement homes around the Maryville area. But, I am now curious to begin looking a bit more towards the northeast.
  • Thank you for such an unbiased and informative video. My wife and I are visiting Tennessee in May, and we hope to move there after our retirement later this year; Bristol and Johnson City are high on our list of places to consider.

Thanks for your videos. I’m moving from Nashville area to FairField Glade, near Crossville soon, and I’d love to hear your take on the area!

This was so thoughtfully done. I feel indebted to you for the thoughtfulness you put into this. Sorry if my name icon comes up 23x. Some sort of computer glitch we don't know how to fix.
  • Scott is an absolute rock star. I was a Realtor for many years and I can tell you, Scott and Kim are amazing!!

I appreciate your videos as well. I have learned much about East Tennessee from watching. We are moving to the Knoxville area in a few months and are both excited and nervous. I like the comparisons between Chattanooga and Johnson City. Hopefully we'll be in the happy middle between those two cities. I love the incredible Smoky Mountains, the unifying pride of UT throughout the city and metro, and the less congested feel than our current location in PHX. Just have to work on getting used to that humidity again. :)
  • Pretty good presentation. We moved to Chattanooga from the North burbs of Chicago 8 years ago. We still love it here. We actually live out in Ooltewah. There are several areas just outside the city that are really nice. On the traffic comments....well everything is relative. If you know where you are going (know the roads), you can get anywhere here in under 30 mins....can't say that about Chicago (or Nashville). There certainly are alot of folks moving here from place like CA, NY, NJ, IL etc and as that continues, the traffic will likely get worse. We both work from home so are quite happy here in our area.
  • Never been to Chattanooga, but enjoying Kingsport the last 4 years. Well done video - fair and balanced, as the saying goes.
  • That’s one thing I don’t miss about Chattanooga is the traffic coming off 75 especially the part that intersects with I24 that crosses. I did enjoy my time there when me and my ex wife were together still. I loved having one of the best lakes in the country to fish In chickamauga as well
  • @c.shoefish
Were moving to TN this year, and more than likely to Chattanooga. Seems to be a better fit for our plans in the future. Thanks for the video

Having grown up in Chattanooga for almost 20years moving to Memphis for over 20 years before moving back to Chattanooga, I can honestly say Chattanooga is WAY BETTER!!! I would agree that we have our problems, but so does every large city!! If people start moving to the tri-cities as you seem to be suggesting, then you are going to start having those “big city problems “ as well.
  • That was an excellent video Thank you Scott for putting it together. answering many questions I had about the two localized areas. I broke down in Dandridge one day traveling back to Nevada where I live from New England where I grew up and remember how friendly and helpful the people were helping me get back on the road. The mechanics were the best charging me a very reasonable price for the repairs not taking advantage of my situation when I was at their mercy. During a separate trip, the people of Bristol were very kind to me and my parents as we were traveling through and stayed the night during an ice storm. I'm stuck in the rat race for now In Vegas but, when the time comes for me to move on in a few years I will give you a call as I would give northeast Tennessee serious consideration.
